Italian Magazines

When I went to stock up on magazines for the flight back from Italy, I headed first straight for these two. Then I saw the similarities: walls of books and the pops of yellow. Remember my fixation on yellow chairs? Well, I’m still fixated. And I always, always love a good bookshelf. Despite my design ADD, some things are a constant!

Elsewhere, my monthly post for Seattle Homes & Lifestyles has been published. It’s all about why grasscloth is so hot right now. You can check it out here.

Blue and Yellow Obesession

I’m more than a little obsessed with blue and yellow right now.

And I mean all shades of blue and all shades of yellow.

Usually when I get like this about a color combination, it’s a specific shade of each color but not this time.

I love the whole range from baby blue to navy …..

to turquoise to ink …..

from lemon yellow to butterscotch ….. all of them!

And of course I can’t leave out what has been my favorite room for at least half a year now:

Light blue Chesterfield and yellow Louis XVI’s.  I mean really. How could you get any better?

Yellow Dining Chairs On My Mind

I know exactly how it began. Earlier this year, I fell madly in love with this room in Elle Decor. (This house is still one of my all-time favorites.)

Then I saw this room in House Beautiful:

(We’re ignoring the sea horses.)

And most recently, I was wowed by this room in Veranda:

What do they have in common? Yellow dining room chairs. I’m obsessed. It’s taking every bit of strength I have not to chuck my dining room chairs and replace them with yellow ones like these. I don’t know how much longer I can hold out . . .

On another note, thank you all for the amazing feedback on Friday’s post. I couldn’t believe the tremendous response and how nearly unanimous it was! Thanks, everybody!

Blue & Yellow

hoh

My love affair with blue and yellow continues from yesterday.

I’ve posted about blue and yellow before here and here and here are some more rooms that get this combination right.

I like the super saturated colors in all these rooms . . .

but also the more toned down version like here:

I love everything about this entry – great chest, chair, mirror, purple rug – and look at the front door!

Black, Yellow and a Wallpaper Update

It’s been a while since I’ve done a yellow and black post.

houseandhome

For me it’s a combination that just doesn’t get old.

I’m liking the wallpaper here quite a bit:

mcm

Speaking of wallpaper, for those of you following my quest for wallpaper for the powder room, I got a sample of the Thatch pattern from Cavern and unfortunately the white is more of an off-white and since the bathroom has pure white woodwork and crown molding, it’s not going to work. And I realized that unless I cover up the woodwork on the lower half of the walls (which I’m definitely not going to do), I’m not going to get that dark, glamorous vibe I was originally envisioning. And Erin found a whole mess of new-to-me fabulous patterns that I’m now considering. And looking at all of these pictures made me thing that maybe I should throw a little yellow into the mix.

Like so:

Or maybe I should just scrap the black altogether and go with yellow and white?

All that is to say I’m not any closer to making a decision!

A Yellow And Gray Post Inspired By Rachel Zoe

haystack

So most of you know that I’ve been completely enamored with yellow all year. And one of my favorite pairings with yellow is gray.

decorpad

Isn’t this a lovely room? Well, what does this have to do with Rachel Zoe, you ask?

I’ll tell you. I was watching her show yesterday (recorded from Monday) and she went to New York for fashion week and stayed at the Thompson LES Hotel. Well, that reminded me that I had drinks on the terrace there back in July and I took a bunch of photos because I fully intended on blogging about it. But being a bit scatterbrained lately, I forgot all about it until I saw her show. Anyway, behold:

A yellow and gray dream come true. Yellow Bertoias. I die.

IMG_1392

But wait. I’m not done yet.

IMG_1388

In some ways, these cushions look gray but they also look taupe-y brown in others, don’t they?

And that leads me to my next point. (I swear this is going somewhere.) I fell in love with the Dwell Studio Draper bedding a while back. Even though I’ve only had white bedding for as long as I can remember, I gave in because I’m a sucker for stripes and in the yellow and gray combination, I couldn’t resist.

Picture 24

I had planned on using this in the fall with a wooly gray throw but the thing is, next to anything gray, these stripes actually look more brown and the yellow is more of a dark mustard. I still love it but it’s not the yellow and gray I thought it was. And that got me thinking about this room that I’ve loved for a while:

dti

At first glance, wouldn’t you say this room was yellow and gray? But looking closely, the gray looks more taupe like in the hotel terrace photos, doesn’t it?

So what I learned from this little exercise is that I think I like yellow and taupe as much as yellow and gray. For you color experts out there: what do you call that color that’s in between gray and taupe?

Writing this post gave me a headache. I hope it didn’t give you one reading it!
