Design Notes from Amarvilas, India

Hi, everybody, I’m back!

Like all my past trips to India, I’m back with fresh new inspiration. These are a few design notes I took around the Oberoi Rajvilas where I stayed in Jaipur. Between the architecture and decor, I couldn’t stop snapping photos. More than anything, I’m really inspired to inject more color into my home now.

In addition to inspiration, I also brought back a couple of extra pounds and I don’t mean just in my suitcase! (If you follow me on Twitter, you saw that I ate nonstop. As a vegetarian, there’s no better place to eat in the world than India.) So today we diet. And we also tackle the mountain of laundry and bursting inbox. Home sweet home!

Pink City, Red Inspiration

www.fromtherightbank.com

Jaipur is known as the “Pink City” because of all the pink buildings like this landmark, the Hawa Mahal. But on this trip I’ve been inspired by all the red details…..

I think red is one of the most intimidating colors when it comes to decor because it can be overwhelming but it can also be one of the most dramatic and beautiful. I started to bring red into the family room back home and now I’m inspired to add even more.

What about you? Is there any red in your homes?

FTRB Elsewhere

Greetings from India!

www.fromtherightbank.com

I’m here in Jaipur and there is a lot to show you but for today, let me tell you about a few other places FTRB has been making an appearance this week.

First, I was happy to weigh in on “The Sneakiest Tricks to Holiday Entertaining on a Dime” over at Refinery29.

Second, I had a lot of fun sharing my top five Christmas gift picks at Belle Maison.

Lastly, thanks to all of your votes, I came in third place in the Houzz holiday contest. Thanks again for all of your support (and putting up with my campaigning)!

I’m now off to shop. Will report back tomorrow!

Design Notes from XVA Gallery, Dubai

Greetings from Dubai!

One of the things I love most about traveling is getting to experience places like the XVA Gallery, an art gallery showcasing contemporary Middle Eastern art as well as a hotel and cafe. I’m always curious as to what creative people are up to around the world and I adore spots like the XVA that are brimming with original designs and ideas. We spent an afternoon viewing art and having lunch in its lovely courtyard. Here are some photos I took of its beautifully decorated spaces for my inspiration files:

Isn’t that chair with the face kind of crazy and fun at the same time?

So it’s been a fun few days – perfect weather, great food and some new experiences: seeing the world’s tallest tower and the world’s only 7-star hotel in the flesh, a ride on an abra (small wooden boat) and “Ladies’ Taxis” driven by and solely for transporting – you guessed it – ladies.

Alright, that’s enough gabbing for today. Next stop: India!

Shopping, Traveling, Blogging & Everyday Life

www.fromtherightbank.com

So ….. today I’m heading back to Rajasthan (India) for a little adventure, including some shopping for the shop. For everyone who’s been asking about a shop update, I’ll be holding a trunk sale at GOODS FROM THE RIGHT BANK with all my finds from my trip after the holidays. If you’d like to be notified when the sale begins, please sign up on the GOODS mailing list and you’ll be the first to know. Thank you so much for your interest!

On this trip, I’ll also be stopping over in Dubai. It’ll be my first time there and I can’t wait to see this in person:

So I’ll be speaking to you from these two places next week!

On that note, I’ve been blogging for nearly three years now and for most of that time, when I traveled I would have guest bloggers fill in for me. Earlier this year, for a number of reasons, I decided to blog from the road instead (whenever that’s possible). As long-time readers know, even when I’m traveling I keep this blog design-focused but for those interested in my travels and more everyday life stuff, I also keep a visual diary using Instagram. Here are some recent photos I posted over there:

This becomes my travel journal when I’m traveling and when I’m home, I post other things I’m interested in like food, fashion, art, theater, music, dogs …… (Yes, I have other interests! Too many, actually.) So if you’d like to keep up with me outside of the blog, you can follow my Instagram photos here. I also send these pics to my Twitter account so you can always just follow me on Twitter if you don’t want to sign up for yet another thing! (If you aren’t familiar with Instagram, it’s a really fun iphone photo app which you can find here.)

And last but not least, there’s Facebook. I finally gave in and started a Page for FTRB this year and I’m so glad I did. Along with my regular blog posts, I publish things that are too short for a full blog post but that I still want to share – things like clippings from magazines, design news, snapshots around the house, great finds for the home and more. Here’s some of what I’ve been posting over there:

Wow, all that seems like a lot when I write it all down but I’ve fallen into a pretty nice rhythm with it all so I wanted to summarize it for you so you can keep up with as much or as little as you’d like.

And with that, I’m out!  I’ll be in the air/in transit for most of tomorrow so I’ll speak to you on Monday from Dubai. I can’t wait to share all my discoveries with you then!
