Another Family Room Sneak Peek

If you’re following along on my 2012 Decorating To Do List, you know that finishing our family room is near the top of the list. It’s where we spend most of our time in the house and I think that’s why I’ve probably redecorated that room more than any other. I’m not done yet but here’s a little peek at what I’ve been doing in there:

Remember the Danish chairs I bought in the fall? They got nice new blue covers thanks to my mom. (You know how I’m loving blue these days.) Now I just need to do my part of the project which is to stain the wood a darker color. Notice how my part hasn’t been done yet and my mom’s part was finished ages ago!

And check this out, the same chair on 1stdibs for $1200:

This makes me feel better about what I spent on them! I also just spotted the same chair at the Tenbosch House Hotel in Brussels:

That’s exactly the color of wood I want for my chairs. The whole hotel has great design by the way.

As you can probably tell I wanted to bring some color into the room so I brought in this painting (which is a very old one of mine) and that became the jumping off point.

I’m also trying out the orange Pop chair (from the living room) in here right now but we’ll see how long it lasts. I’ll have some more peeks as I get closer to crossing this room off of my list!

Minimalism on the Sea

I’m no minimalist but I really appreciate architecture like this which looks simple at first but is anything but.

Obviously it’s all about the view. I mean WOW.

I am blown away by the materials, the delineation of rooms and most of all, the way the house relates to that amazing setting.

I’ve been on an organization/simplification kick lately (more on that later this week) and this house is the perfect inspiration.

On My Radar: Shots of Turquoise

www.fromtherightbank.com

Shots of blue were on my radar a few months ago and they still are except now instead of ink, it’s turquoise.

Turquoise is one of those colors that can go wrong very easily but when done well like in these spaces, there’s nothing fresher or brighter.

How do you feel about turquoise? Love it or hate it?

Living la Belle Vie: Pretty Lists and Notes

So I started making a list of all the ways we can live la belle vie (the good life) as I defined it last week. As I filled up page after page, I thought of doing one long epic post but concluded it would be better in small doses because none of this is earth-shattering stuff which is precisely why you could read it all in one go then promptly forget them. So, I think a weekly reminder of how to make each day just a little nicer is how this series will unfold.

As I was making my list, I thought the notebook I was writing in was a great example of taking an ordinary task and making it a little more pleasant so let’s start there.

I write down all my ideas for the blog in this notebook:

www.fromtherightbank.com

Yes, it’s filled with all kinds of brilliance! Ha! Anyway, it’s a plain kraft paper hardcover sketchbook from Ecojot. (I just pasted one of my calling cards on the cover.) These are my favorite because I can personalize them and I love the heavyweight, acid-free paper that I can use thick pens and Sharpies on. They also hold up well to to glue and paste so it’s good for the moodboards I make in them like this one (which I posted before):

I also keep a separate book for daily to do’s/schedule, a travel journal and a personal journal.

I know some people are 100% paperless but I just can’t give up paper. So if you’re like me and you’re always jotting down notes, reminders, to do lists, etc., do yourself a favor and ditch those ugly spiral notebooks and legal pads. Instead, pick up a nice notebook or journal that’s pretty to look at and has paper with a texture you like writing on. Use a great pen too while you’re at it! I like ones that either bleed tons of ink or write super fine.

www.fromtherightbank.comWriting lists and notes may be a mundane task but doing it in a nice little notebook turns it into something enjoyable. Plus, it’ll look cute on your desk and we all like cute desks, don’t we? So, are you a list keeper? Do you journal? Do you have any favorite supplies?

Thanks again for all the feedback on the new blog design this week. Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!

Hotel The Exchange, Amsterdam

www.fromtherightbank.com

Fashion and interior design go hand in hand and runway to room type features are pretty common in magazines and blogs. But what happens when interiors are actually “dressed” like models on a runway?

www.fromtherightbank.com

That’s the concept behind Hotel the Exchange in Amsterdam. Students and graduates of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute treated the rooms as if for a fashion show and the result is like nothing I’ve ever seen in any hotel.

I just love the out-of-the box thinking. To make it even better, the hotel is housed in buildings dating back to the 1600′s and is also part of an urban renewal project. Fabulous all around.
