Hotel Picks From The Right Bank: Paris, Thailand, New York, Oman

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

You may have noticed that my last post in the Hotel Picks FROM THE RIGHT BANK series was a roundup. This is the format I’m going to use from now on because since I moved to a weekly posting schedule, I can’t devote an entire post to just one hotel without FTRB becoming a hotel blog(!) So this means you’re going to get a huge dose of amazing hotel design in one sitting, like today. There are worse things that could happen.

I also went back and tagged all of the posts in the series by location to make them easier to find. I tagged them by city for those that I visit regularly and the rest by country. That took a good part of a day because it turns out I’ve posted 91 hotels in the past 5 years! So that’s what I’ve been doing with all my time…..

Anyway, on to today’s roundup…..

All of these images above are from the Hotel du Continent in Paris where Christian Lacroix has worked his magic once again. The concept is that each floor of the hotel represents one continent and it’s executed in that wonderfully whimsical way that is Lacroix’ signature. Here are a few more views:

It seems I can’t resist his hotel designs as evidenced by my posts here, here and here which, by the way, was my first ever Hotel Picks FROM THE RIGHT BANK post!

Another designer with a very distinct point of view is Paola Navone and I just love her fresh take on things. When I first saw these photos of Point Yamu in Phuket in the current issue of Italian Elle Decor, I knew she had to be behind it.

Next up is the Marlton in New York which kind of transports me to Paris and there is nothing I don’t like about that.

I wish I could find some more photos but this is the best I could do. I’m considering staying there when I go to New York in the spring so maybe I’ll just take some myself. I’ll post an update here if I do.

Last but not least, check out the Six Senses Zighy Bay in Oman…..

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

Maybe it’s because of the recent Snowpocolpyse (Part II) in IceLanta but these sandy beaches are looking very inviting right about now and the indigenous architecture and style of Zighy Bay make it stand out from your standard beach resort.

A Painterly Tour of a Venice Palazzo

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

If you’re on Instagram, chances are good that you saw the explosion of the Waterlogue app the past week which converts photos into digital watercolors. As you can see by this video I posted, I went a little crazy with it in Venice (mostly while I was up with jet lag). As much as I love watercolors though, I love oil paintings more so when I discovered the Glaze app which transforms photos into paintings, I really went bonkers. I used it on some of the beautiful interior shots I took in Venice so here’s something a little different from my usual design notes.

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

These are all from photos I took at the Aman Hotel which I blogged about here. Being as obsessed with hotels as I am, the whole experience felt like a dream. To think that the entire palazzo was once a private residence boggles the mind. I think I can definitively state it is the most beautiful hotel I have ever stayed in. I’m still sort of in a daze.

I used to have big plans of drawing and painting on my trips, packing art supplies everywhere I went. But I stopped doing that because I found I never had enough time so this is a nice option. Not that anything can ever replace an artist’s hand, of course! I hope you enjoyed this painterly tour!

Latest Hotel Picks FROM THE RIGHT BANK: Berlin, Oslo, Salzburg & Venice

God, I love hotel design. And just when I fear I’ve seen them all, along comes a whole new crop to kick my wanderlust into high(er) gear. Here are four new European hotels whose designs really stand out for me.

First up, I knew I was going to like Berlin’s Das Stue when I read Patricia Urquiola was the designer. It was the former Danish embassy which looks like this on the outside:

Now look what she did on the inside:

Second, we have the Thief in Oslo:

Rich textures and dark tones give it a dramatic atmosphere that is an interesting departure from the light and airy interiors we’re more used to seeing in Scandinavian spaces.

Next, the Wiesergut (near Salzburg) uses classic materials within a modern structure that is designed to blend into the Alpine landscape.

And last but not least, everyone in the travel industry is all over the new Aman Canale Grande Hotel in Venice.

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

Aman resorts have a sterling reputation so expectations are high for their newest property. Judging strictly by these photos, my guess is it probably wouldn’t disappoint(!) But I think I need to pay it a visit to be certain….. purely for research purposes, of course. FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

Room Love: Cathedral-Like Library

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

An historic building re-imagined as a sleek, modern hotel gets me every time but especially when a tome-filled library is its centerpiece. This is the library/lounge of the new B2 Boutique Hotel in Zurich housed in a former brewery and it holds over 30,000 books!  My jaw dropped when I saw the extra high ceiling, arched windows and those light fixtures.

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

The belted chairs and tables are kind of cooky and funky, don’t you think?

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

I like what’s going on with the walls too. Overall I think the design is really original and does a great job of highlighting the architectural features of the building.

Hotel Picks From The Right Bank: Chateau Marmont or Beverly Hills Hotel?

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

Another trip I’ve been planning this year is California later in the spring. There’s no shortage of new, hip and sleek design hotels in L.A. but I’m in the mood for something old Hollywood. To me that means either Chateau Marmont or the Beverly Hills Hotel even though the two are totally different in style.

First, Chateau Marmont and its Loire Valley chateau meets midcentury vibe:

I can’t help but think of Somewhere.

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

I just loved that movie, didn’t you?

Then there’s the mission revival Beverly Hills Hotel with its iconic pink and green decor and the famous banana leaf wallpaper.

Which would you choose?
