Furniture

Stumpy

I’ve been kind of loving the look of tree stumps as side tables or seating.

And I guess I’m not the only one. West Elm is even selling them now:

So a part of me is over it. But a part of me also thinks it’s a great way to add a natural element that is also really functional. What do you think?

I’m Back + This Wall Of Postcards Is Bananas

Hi, everyone, I’m back! What a fantastic trip! Once I get organized, I’ll share a few photos with you but for now, let’s start the week off with this bit of amazingness:

insideout

I have a massive postcard collection that I started decades ago and I’ve always wanted to cover a wall with them like wallpaper. I think this is the best example I’ve found yet. Isn’t it incredible? Or does it give you a headache? I wouldn’t do it in the living room or anything but maybe somewhere small like the office area in the kitchen or the laundry room. I’m also lusting after the Chesterfield. I’ve had a thing for Chesterfields for a very long time.

I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you but before I go I’d like to say a big thank you to all my fabulous guest bloggers. It was great to have you here! Thank you!

Still Searching for a Worn Leather Chair

redticking2

I’m still on the hunt for a worn leather chair. I originally wanted one for the family room but we put the Bergère chair in there and I think it’s perfect for the space. But I’d still love a leather chair.

redticking

In the basement, we have what some people would call a media room; I just call it our hangout room. (The whole basement is a disaster so it’ll be a while before I can you show you any of it.)

mcm

There’s a slip covered couch and a big teak coffee table there now and I think a leather chair would make a great complement.

sseductive

Don’t you love how I can create a need where there really isn’t one? It’s a gift.

Even Bigger and Better Union Jacks!

So remember my post on Union Jacks the other day? The very next day, the very fabulous Decor Demon posted about Betsy Burnham’s house and in her daughter’s room was this amazing dresser:

MG_4485_receipt_web

This has DIY written all over it. So I did a little more web surfing and I found this:

Union-Jack-French-DresserByMerandaSnyder1

at French Provincial Furniture. She even shows a step-by-step of how it was done. I’ve said over and over that I’m completely useless at DIY but I am so tempted to try my hand at this!!!

And if that doesn’t work out, I could just buy this one from the Paris Apartment:

unionjack2a

or maybe this one from Sharland and Lewis:

union-jack-chest-of-drawers-480

if one of my buddies in the U.K. wants to pick it up and ship it to me. HA!

What do you think? Should I give it a go myself?

Wanted: Low Stools

suzannekasler

I’ve been looking on and off for a pair of low stools for the living room. I could also use one in the master bathroom at the vanity.

Picture 57

I don’t think I want the plain X-stools that seem to be everywhere but beyond that I have no idea what I want.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for your visits and comments this week and especially the great discussion on Wednesday. Have a great weekend!

Copper Pendants and My Devotion to Arne Jacobsen

AT

You know how everyone is loving brass lately? Well, I am too but I’ve also been really attracted to Tom Dixon‘s copper pendant for a while.

tomdixon2

Over the weekend, I was perusing my files for rooms with copper lighting and I noticed something really interesting . . .

elleinteriorse

All the rooms also had Arne Jacobsen chairs in them: the Egg chair above and below:

Picture 79

and the Swan and Series 7 chairs here:

sh

As most of you know, I’m a chair addict and Arne Jacobsen is a big reason for that. Worship would be an understatement for what I feel for the man. I have a set of the Series 7 in my kitchen and the Egg Chair is on the top of my wishlist. (I wouldn’t mind a Swan either!) I even went to Copenhagen a few years ago, largely in part to see the SAS Hotel for which he designed everything, including his Egg and Swan chairs. (I’m not messing around here, people, my devotion is serious!)

I thought it was so interesting to see how my search for copper pendants led me to these rooms. I guess it’s safe to say the homeowners of these rooms and I have similar tastes and styles.

Speaking of which, I’m thrilled that so many people (80 so far!) have participated in the What’s Your Style in One Picture Challenge III!  I hope you will too!

Reader’s Question: Saarinen Tulip Table & Chairs + a Q&A

tulip

I get questions from readers from time to time about various design issues. Normally they’re quickly answered but sometimes they’re a little more involved like a question I got recently from Kelley. I thought the discussion might be interesting for you as well so (with Kelley’s permission) I’m posting her question and my answer here. (It was fun putting this together so I think I’ll make this a regular thing as interesting questions come in.)

QUESTION

Hello Ally,
I am huge fan of your blog, I follow it almost everyday! My husband and I just purchased a home and I am SOOOO excited to be decorating it the way I have always wanted! I have a dilemma, my style is similar to yours, I would say that my style is eclectic and vintage with a modern flair. My dilemma is such…I adore the Saarinen table with the marble top, I wanted to purchased the table and tulip chairs for the dining room but thought it might be too matchy matchy, I was considering purchasing an antique pedestal round table and getting only the tulip chairs. But I REALLY love the dining table too so I am not sure what to do, what do you think would look best in your opinion? HELP!!!

Kelly

ANSWER

In general, I prefer things not to be matchy-matchy as well. However, dining rooms are the one place where I’m not opposed to a matching set, especially when it is something so classic and beautiful as the Saarinen tulip table and chairs. I mean, what’s not to like about this room:

modani

However, it is a very modern, streamlined look so if you’re goal is to achieve a more eclectic feel, I think your first instinct of mixing the table or chairs is a good one.

So then the next question is do you get the table or chairs? That’s a tough call. The more popular option seems to be using the table with different types of chairs:

decorpad3

decorpad6

decorpad

decorpad5

decorpad4

I really like this look, not to mention it gives you an excuse to buy some really cool chairs(!) But, practicality may play a part here. I know you want a marble top version and my personal experience with marble is that it is not very user-friendly. It’s very easy to stain, scratch and damage. (Citrus and wine are the worst!) Marble can also crack quite easily (as I painfully learned).

If you share this concern, you may want to opt for just the chairs with a different table. The other plus side of getting the chairs is that you can always use them elsewhere like in an office, for example. This was the only example I could find:

styleathome

Having said all this, there is one more option. I don’t know what type of house you are moving into but if it has industrial or rustic architectural features, you could still get that eclectic vibe even with a matching set:

barkerandstonehousecouk

Otherwise, if you chose pieces that were more ornate or traditional for the rest of the room, that could also have the same effect:

livingetc

I think this is my favorite option because it would be too hard for me to choose between the table and chairs(!) What do you all think?

Well, I hope this was helpful, Kelley, and I hope you’ll send me some photos of what you decide!

If you’d like my opinion on a design question for possible posting here, please click here. It may take me a while but I’ll answer as many as I can.

Splendidwillow

Elsewhere today, my very sweet friend Monika is doing a little Q&A with me as part of the “In the Spotlight” series on her blog, Splendid Willow. I’m sure you’re already familiar with her wonderful blog but just in case you aren’t, you will love it – and her. They both embody that Swedish elegance that I just adore. The series has included many amazing designers and artists whom I admire and I’m beyond honored to take part. I hope you’ll join us!

Updating Our Dining Room Furniture

mcmit

One of the big items we got from my parents as part of their downsizing is an antique dining set. I was happy to get it since the white table and chairs we had in our old dining room have gone into the eat-in area of the kitchen and we needed something in the space. It’s a very lovely set but very traditional so I have been trying to think of different ideas for updating it.

centsationalgirl

One look I’ve always liked is white painted chairs with dark wooden tables. These are some examples I’ve found.

centsational

Our chairs are not these styles, but you get the idea.

tti

(And look at all the gold frames – this could have been part of Monday’s post . . . )

Being obsessed with white, my first thought was white paint for the wood but then I saw this image and it made me think that gray may be nice:

houseofturquoise

I had the walls painted a very soft, light gray (something between the curtains in this room and the walls outside) so I think gray chairs could work really well. But then again, that might be too matchy-matchy so I will probably just go with white.

Of course all this is if I can get up the nerve to paint these beautiful old chairs. (My mom is going to be horrified!) I just feel bad about painting antique wood furniture. I would probably have less of a problem if they weren’t family pieces. But for the sake of aesthetics, I think I can get over it(!) Does anyone else feel guilty about painting antiques?

More Chair Reupholstering Options

So I think this is how I’ve decided to reupholster those chairs I showed you last week:

Picture 161

This chair is exactly the same style – down to the carvings in the wood – and it would fit in perfectly with the black and white color scheme I talked about yesterday.

I’m 99% sure (today) that that’s the way I want to go but here’s an example of how the chair could look painted blue which I had also talked about:

Picture 163

(But I would choose a different pattern fabric.)

And then here’s an option with the wood left as is:

Picture 162

With a really bold print, it could still be modern and fresh. Or maybe I’ll save this idea for the dining chairs. Photos of those are coming soon!

A Reupholstering How-To

As a follow-up to my post yesterday, Raina is kindly sharing her reupholstering tutorial with us today. So without further ado . . .

——————————-

Hello Delicious Dumplings!  I’m Raina, the snark goddess from If the Lamp Shade Fits. A few months ago, Ally asked for my help with an upholstery project and I was happy to oblige with a short how-to.  Two college summers spent working for an upholsterer not only gave me valuable DIY skills but also taught me scads about furniture construction.

As it turns out, a fauteuil (the type of chair Ally’s mother so generously gifted) is the easiest furniture piece to re-cover.  It was the first chair I was allowed to do by myself at the shop.  For those of you ready to flex your DIY muscles, I will walk you through re-upholstering a simple French chair in only eight steps.

This no-sew project should take an afternoon of your time, and we’re assuming the construction of your chair is sound.

Supplies and Tools

- fabric of your choice
- either gimp (trim) or nail head (upholstery) tacks
- a staple remover/tack lifter

tacklifter

- pliers
- iron
- extra batting (optional)
- staple gun
- scissors
- glue gun or tack hammer

1.  To purchase the correct amount of new fabric, measure the existing fabric on the chair and add 10%.  I wouldn’t advise a satin or anything too delicate for your first time out.  Measure the length of existing gimp (or welt) and add 6 inches OR count the nailhead tacks and add a dozen extra (upholstery tacks can be found online if you don’t have a local resource).

Now you’re ready to begin!

2.  Remove any gimp or welt (the trim that looks like a long fabric tube wrapping the edges).  Find the start/stop point and gently peel the gimp off or pry up the welt with the staple remover.  If you have nail head trim, use the staple remover to lift the tacks off.

3.  You will see the old fabric is simply stapled onto the chair frame.  Remove the staples with the staple remover and pliers.  If a staple brakes, make sure to pry off the broken bit.

Remove-Tacks-Staples-Reupholstery-MKOVR0407-de

4.  Take off the old fabric and iron it.  Lay it on top of your new fabric, making sure it is centered on your new fabric’s pattern.  Add an inch allowance all around and cut.  Do this for each piece – armrest, etc.

5.  Check to make sure your batting (stuffing) is in good shape.  If it’s thin in places, layer on more batting.  If you decide you want a much cushier ride, make sure to allow for the extra when cutting the new fabric.

6.  Take your new piece of fabric and starting from the center back of the seat, throw a few staples into the narrow wood edge.  Now go to the center front and pulling the fabric firmly (but not stretching it) and throw in a few more staples.  Do the same for the sides.  Keep moving around the piece a few staples at a time, pulling the fabric firmly as you go.  Repeat the process for the chair back and armrests.  If you have access to a pneumatic stapler (shown) -  fantastic! – if not a regular ole staple gun will work.

Reupholstery-Attach-Fabric-MKOVR0407-de

You are almost finished!

7.  With a pair of scissors, trim the excess fabric off the piece as close to the wood edge as possible.

8.  Cover the staples by either hot-gluing the gimp or nailing the tacks (the first option is the easier of the two).  I’m skipping the welt cord option because it is a little more advanced and requires some sewing.

TAH-DAH!  You have mastered basic upholstery and are the proud owner of a fab new chair.

Feel free to leave any questions in the comments and I will do my best to answer them for you.

Good luck!

Thanks a million Raina! See? I told you she knows how to do everything.

Future DIY Project

Remember I said I was getting a lot of furniture from my parents? Well, the lot included a couch and love seat that my mom really doesn’t want me to alter and I’ve been strongly discouraged from doing anything to the antique dining set but she’s okay with my painting and reupholstering these two chairs:

DSC_2934

Aren’t they just ripe for a coat of paint and some fabulous fabric?

I posted some ideas for these before here and here are some more ideas along the same lines. I found these two on a blog called Let Your Creativity Flow:

lycf2

letyourcreativityflow

and this one from a company called the Divine Chair Company:

Picture 149

I’m hoping to do my own Before and After like this one from Apartment Therapy:

AT

I already have a killer tutorial on reupholstering from Raina (AKA the woman who knows how to do everything), so this will be my first project just as soon as I finish unpacking. Since that’ll be in like 10 years, I’ll have plenty of time to decide on a color and pattern. I was leaning toward white or black for the wood but lately I’ve been drawn to kelly green and electric blue. What do you think?

Worn Leather Chairs

Given my chair addiction, it’s hard to believe that there could be a lack of seating around here but we could actually use an armchair in the family/keeping room. We just have our gray couch in there right now and that’s fine when it’s just the two of us but when my mom and another friend were here last week, we realized we needed another chair or two in that room. In the last house we had our orange Pop chair with the couch but that’s now in my office. So I’ve been trying to decide what kind of chair I want and I think I’d like a worn leather clubby chair like these:

holtum.dkviastylefiles

or these two off to the left here:

cocokelley

I know you’ve all seen Abigail Ahern’s house before but it’s the perfect example of what I’m talking about:

lucyina2

The gray couch here is very similar to mine (see yesterday’s post for a photo). The beauty of this is that I’ve always loved distressed leather chairs and now I have a good excuse to get one! I love when that happens! So the search begins.

Today’s Crush: Handpainted Chinoiserie Cocktail Table

The convenience of shopping at midnight in my pajamas is really giving my credit card a workout. I should really stop but I keep finding amazing bargains like this hand painted Chinoiserie style table:

v76349

It’s only $249.05 and I want it very, very badly.

I recently read somewhere that one of the decorators on HGTV (Taniya Nayak, I think) furnished her entire house with things she bought online. At first I thought, “no way” but then I realized that as much as I shop online these days, I could totally do that! How much of your shopping is done on the internet?

Hand Me Down Furniture

My parents have decided that they want to downsize. This translates into me being “gifted” a lot of furniture, china, crystal and all sorts of other what I call “grown up” things. Fortunately my mom has impeccable taste and since we have a lot more rooms to fill in the new house, I’m not complaining.

livingetc

My mom’s taste runs more traditional than mine (a lot of antiques and dark wood) so I have plans to update a lot of the pieces. I’m thinking paint and upholstery in unexpected colors . . .

chaircouture

I don’t know how my mom is going to feel about that! We’ll soon find out . . . I’m off to pick her up at the airport now.

A truck is arriving later this week so I’ll show you everything when it gets here. There’s also a very cool surprise in the mix!

Pretty In Pink

We’re back in business, folks! And thank goodness because not being connected makes me all jittery. I hate that it does but it does.

10_20_08_Ines_Fressange18398

Anyhoo, I’ve got my iMac all plugged in, which means I finally have access to my stash of blog images, which makes me oh so happy.  As I was going through them today, I was really drawn to all the bright pink.

145

I know pink is a tough color for anyone with males in their household but I want to find a way to incorporate it somewhere in the new house.

decor8

But before that I need to finish unpacking. I’m up to my eyeballs in STUFF and totally exhausted but it’s slowly getting there.

ddd

(Thank you, Susan, for reminding me that it doesn’t all have to be done in one day.  You don’t know how much I needed someone to remind me of that!)

My mom is flying in tomorrow to tell me what to do I mean, help. She’s a total dynamo (I apparently inherited the slacker gene from my dad) so she’s going to whip this place into shape in no time.

The Perfect Sofa?

I would like to continue the discussion of this room from yesterday’s post.

atelierabigailahern

Aside from the fab chandelier, I’m completely in love with this sofa.

It looks like this sofa from George Smith:

Picture 111

George Sherlock also makes a similar one:

Picture 115

There is also the Lee Industries version which Lauren at Pure Style Home actually found on Craiglist! She then had it upholstered in the most beautiful shade of green:

purestylehome

Isn’t it just the most gorgeous couch ever? (By the way, Lauren’s been decorating her new house and doing the most amazing job. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really must.)

I don’t need a sofa at the moment since ours is only a couple of years old. But someday I will and this one could work in a variety of different style of rooms:

and looky here, another occasion to post Jenna Lyons’ living room:

{5F4E5C5E-8330-4592-8012-312BEFECDE20}

Will I ever tire of her house? At this point, I’m thinking no.

Do you have a favorite couch style?

Abigail Ahern

Picture 89

I think most of you know how fabulous stylist and designer Abigail Ahern is. On the off chance you don’t, NKP at Head Over Heels had a great post on her work a couple of months ago. And more recently, so did Jenny at My Favorite and My Best.

Of all the spaces she’s designed for herself and others, the one that is just killing me is this:

atelierabigailahern

This is her own living room and I love it so much it hurts. The chandelier is bananas and since my own Murano chandelier has bitten the dust, I actually have an excuse to get another one. Has anyone seen this in the flesh? What do you think? Aside from the chandelier, I love, love, love this couch. And don’t even get me going about the gray walls. I guess what I’m saying is I basically want to move into her house.

I’m going to continue the discussion of this room (and the couch in particular) tomorrow after I’ve stopped spazzing out. Join me again tomorrow, won’t you?

A Window Seat Of My Own

You know how I love window seats? Well, this weekend I finally did something about it.

I got this trunk a while back on sale at Nordstrom. (Their home department in the Seattle store is tiny but always has great stuff! I never leave without buying something.)  This past weekend I wedged it into a nook in the bedroom and voilà, a window seat of my own:

DSC_1617

In the trunk, I keep all the pillows that are not currently being used. It’s stuffed so full, the lid barely wants to stay down(!)

DSC_1602

I never hung out in this spot before but now I just love it. It’s my new place to write in my journal or just veg out and gaze out at the trees which I managed to do a little of this weekend. How was your weekend?

Haunted By The Ghost Chair

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve written about black chandeliers as well as black and white decor. In putting those posts together, I forgot this one.

theblissfulbride

I can’t tell you how much I love this room. The white! The view! The black chandelier! The Saarinen table! A banquette! I even have that Marimekko pillow!

But what really gets me are the ghost chairs. They really get me in this photo from last week’s post too:

dti2

Now, I know they’re old news. Even though I have always loved them, I never considered buying one because I thought it was a fad, something I’d get sick of as soon as I brought home.

casasugar
Well it’s been years and I still love them.

nyspacesmag

In the meantime, I’ve bought plenty of other things that I thought were lifelong purchases which have turned out not to be the case.

fetemagazine

So is it time to take the plunge? At one point does something stop being a fleeting fancy? Do you have something you’ve resisted buying?

I want to thank you all again for your support over at AT this week and also for your votes for the Love this Site Award. It really means so much to me so thank you! Have a great weekend!

Ikea Trollsta

sh

I have been loving the Ikea Trollsta sideboard since it came out. I’ve resisted it because a) I don’t have any room for it and b) I generally avoid things that scream “I’m from Ikea.” But  I just can’t get it out of my mind – especially in yellow!  Look how great it looks in these spaces!

unplggd

And this one even has a mini Twiggy lamp on it which I love so much. So it’s basically torture looking at this photo:

So I need you all to talk me out of it. Please tell me all the reasons I shouldn’t get this. Thank you, I know I can count on you!

Mismatched Chairs

Picture 107_copy

Years ago, I had a friend with the cutest apartment in San Francisco that was furnished on practically no budget. One of my favorite things about her apartment was the dining area which consisted of a really long rustic table and a mishmash of random chairs that she either found or were given. I had never seen anyone do that before and remember being really impressed. Nowadays, it seems to be a pretty popular option and here are some of my favorite examples.

There was also a great post on mixing chairs at Down and Out Chic a while ago.

French Settees And Colorful Pillows

dressdesign

In the past week, I’ve bought three new pillows. I’m out of control. Soon there won’t be any room in our house for any inhabitants. It’ll just be a house filled with pillows. But I just can’t help myself. Pretty pillows, especially on French settees, make me weak in the knees.

And who does that look better than Anna at Black and Spiro?

blackspiro

I’m sure you’ve all heard by now that her work just got published in Australian Vogue Living. It’s easy to see why!

blackandspiro

All of these photos make me want to have my French settee reupholstered in burlap or gray and white stripes (like in the first photo). Is it wrong to have something reupholstered that was freshly reupholstered and hasn’t been used at all? Also, does anyone have any idea how much something like that costs? (Mine is an antique and looks like the second to the last one. No removable cushions.) Thanks for any tips and advice!

Today’s Crush: Pink Ants

Picture 88

It’s no secret that I love anything by Arne Jacobsen. We have his Series 7 chairs in our dining room but I think the Ant chair is also equally fabulous. Especially in pink! This photo, by the way, is my current screen saver. I’m in love with the whole space.

Also, Christina from Down and Out Chic is featuring me today in her Hump Day Spotlight. I think of her as one of my first blogging pals so I’m really touched that she would choose me for her series. Head on over to her blog today for some words of wisdom (ha!) and a few other fun bits. Thanks, Christina, you’re a doll!

And if you aren’t totally sick of me by now, I’m at ofifteen as a visiting blogger all week. I’m cooking today (scary)!

[Update 7.12.09: I've replaced the photo with a different format. I hope it's visible to everyone now.]

Window Seat Love

 nytimes

I’ve had a thing for window seats for the longest time. If I walk into a room and there is a window seat, I’m heading straight for it. It’s one of those things that are just impossible to resist. Just last week, Blair at Delight by Design posted some great window seats. Here are some more that I’ve collected:

Are any of you lucky enough to have a window seat?

Tulips (Or, The Death Of A Coffee Table)

Picture 36

In the past couple of weeks, I had occasion to leave comments at two different blogs about my beloved Saarinen tulip coffee table. So I thought I’d share it here.

We found an original marble top Saarinen tulip coffee table at the Marché aux Puces in Paris. It wasn’t cheap but worth every penny in my opinion. I loved that table like crazy. Well, one day my husband tripped over something and basically landed on the side of the table. (To this day I have no idea how he managed that.) I immediately ran over to check on the table, then him. Did I mention it was an original Saarinen? From the 50′s? There are only so many of those around, you know. Anyway, the husband was fine but the marble cracked from one side to the other and broke right off. So tragic.

So as far as I’m concerned I’m still owed a Saarinen of some sort. And I have always loved the tulip chair . . .

It’s such a beautiful piece of furniture, it really is worthy of its own room. I realize that isn’t realistic for most of us but I love this image!
