The English Country House

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

This time of year makes me think of holiday movies which (naturally) makes me think of interiors in holiday movies. Remember how Kate Winslet’s cottage in the Holiday sent all the lady bloggers into a tizzy (almost as much as the Hamptons house in Something’s Gotta Give). That was nuts. Anyway, English country houses have always been infinitely interesting to me because they can be anything from a cottage to a manor to an estate, but all with that quirky sensibility that is uniquely English.

Well, if your taste runs more Downton Abbey than the Holiday, you are going to love The English Country House  (Vendome Press, October 2013) by James Peill, Photographs by James Fennell with a forward, incidentally, by Downton‘s creator Julian Fellowes.

The English Country House features ten properties that date back hundreds, even a thousand years and remain in the families of the original owners. As a result they are filled with rich histories, heirlooms and collections that give each a real sense of home – albeit a very grand one! Diverse architectural styles, idyllic settings, fascinating stories….. the romance of the English country house is alive and well in these homes.

It is a perfect companion to the Irish Country House also by James Peill and the Scottish Country House by James Knox, both of which are favorites in my design library.

Art Walls, Part 29 + Looking for Art

Thanks so much for all the nice comments and all the pins (and repins!) of my dining room art wall last week. That reminded me of all the new art walls I’ve come across in the past couple of months so let’s take a look, shall we?

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

I’m sure you’ve already seen this room all over the place but I just have to congratulate Emily Henderson on the really fantastic studio she designed for Oh Joy. The whole space is great but this wall is my favorite part. Girlfriend can hang an art wall! Here’s another view:

I’d be happy just looking at this all day but there are a few more really successful walls I want to share.

Off the topic, I love this sconce:

Anyone know the source?

And while we’re on the topic of art….. I have a confession. You know how much I love it – viewing it, studying it, reading about it, sourcing it, creating it – but I have empty walls all over the place in my house just waiting for the perfect piece of art.

The worst is my family room mantel which currently looks like this:

I know. Pathetic. I haven’t been happy with anything I’ve put there so far. So I finally just stripped the whole thing while I figure out what to hang once and for all. This is one of those I’ll-know-it-when-I-see-it situations. So I’m on the hunt.

And not too far from that is this spot in the kitchen:

Here I’m pretty sure I want some sort of a fun print and I’m considering ordering either this:

or this:

I found these on etsy here and here. What do you think?

Beyond Chic and Tom Scheerer Decorates

This is a special Saturday post to tell you about two great (and I mean, great) design books hot off the presses.

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

First, Beyond Chic, Great Fashion Designers at Home by Ivan Terestchenko (Vendome Press, October 2013) may just be the most beautiful book of the past few years. (Just look at that cover!) As the title suggest, it takes us into the homes of some of the most chic designers, stylists and insiders of the fashion industry. The homes of everyone from Chanel and Alaïa to Yves Saint Laurent and Pucci span the globe as well as styles. The details, art and collections of these icons are interesting, sometimes offbeat and of course, chic. If, like me, you enjoy peeking into homes of creative people, you will love Beyond Chic.

The next book that you must add to your library is Tom Scheerer Decorates by Mimi Read, Photographs by Francesco Lagnese (Vendome Press, September 2013). Tom Scheerer is one of the greatest designers of our time and it’s hard to believe there hasn’t been a book of his work until now. As the introduction states:

In an age when houses exhibiting unchecked exuberance, high drama, or conspicuous luxury get all the attention, leading interior designer Tom Scheerer has cultviated a more restrained brand of chic, a look he modestly describes as “cheerful” and “no nonsense.”

That may just be the understatement of the year!

Art Walls, Part 28 (It’s Roundup Time Again!)

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

You may have thought you had seen the last of my Art Walls posts after I exhausted my files. But posting less frequently = a whole slew of new ones. So let’s get to it, shall we?

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

These are mainly of the mixed media/mixed frames variety (my favorite)…..

This is an oldie but a goodie that I can’t believe I haven’t posted before (or at least I don’t remember if I have!):

And here’s another old favorite. You remember India Hicks’ home and that famous pink couch, right?

Are we over wash tape yet? I think I’m pretty close but it’s still a good option if you want something temporary and easy to switch out like for an inspiration board:

Lastly, this isn’t much of an art wall but I just love the whole space (even the gnome which I should be over):

By the way, since Google Reader died I’ve been trying out different options like Feedly and have run into a lot of  bugs and glitches. Bloglovin’ seems to be working best for me. What are you all using? If you’d like to follow FTRB through Bloglovin’ click here.

Home Chic by India Mahdavi

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

I’ve been a fan of India Mahdavi for a long time which won’t come as a surprise to you if you’re familiar with her offbeat, international style. So when I read she had a new book coming out, I pre-ordered it and even though I only received it last week, it’s already becoming a favorite so I wanted to share it with you. (I’ve been enjoying it with my morning cup.)

FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

I would put Home Chic in the category of how-to books (but with better photography) and the city guide section with her favorite shops around the world is something I’ll be consulting for sure. Oh and I love the sofcover too. It feels like a journal more than a book.   Plus it’s gold. FROM THE RIGHT BANK | www.fromtherightbank.com

There are plenty of inspirational images, many from her own home, along with great simple tips and design rules for you to use or break. Like I said, it’s more of a guidebook but executed really well (which can’t be said for a lot of books in this category).

And speaking of books, I’m working on another edition of Design Library Essentials too so look for that soon.
