Paeonia Wallpaper from Anthropologie

I remember dying over this Anthropologie wallpaper when it first came out but forgot all about it until I stopped in at the store last week .

I just love the huge scale!

I also love both colorways equally. The blue is more vibrant in person and the yellow is more mustard.

I’ve been looking for images of it used in a real room but haven’t been able to find any. Have you seen this paper used anywhere? What do you think?

Art Wall, Part 8

Art walls have been on my mind even more than usual lately. I’m working with the coolest client right now putting an art wall together for her dining room. We’re doing it all by email – shopping for art, choosing frames, coming up with a layout – and I have to say it’s one of my favorite projects to date.

So here’s some recent inspiration. Each one is completely different in style and yet I love them all.

If you missed any prior art wall posts, you can see them all here.

Thanks for another fun week of blogging! Have a great weekend!

Mini Mirror Collection

Lately it seems like I can’t leave the house without coming back with a small gold gilt mirror. They just keep appearing in my path. Here are three I’ve picked up so far. They were small (i.e. easily transported) and the prices were right for Italian mirrors so I couldn’t pass them up.

So, another collection begins. Is this how hoarders start out?

I’m So Glad I Looked at a Million Wall Sconces

I removed the wall sconces above the fireplace in the family room when we moved into our house a year ago. They weren’t horrible but they just weren’t “me.” (I started typing “us” but let’s get real.) I had intended to replace them with the Circa two-arm sconces but there was that little part of me that kept saying “Yes, but maybe you’ll find another one you like better.”

So fast forward a year later: after looking at a million sconces, guess what? There’s not a single sconce I like better! Yup, I’m so glad I spent all those hours looking at all those other lights. It’s not like I had anything better to do ….. Sheesh. So  a year later, my first choice has been ordered and are on their way. I can’t wait to see them in place!

If you get a chance, stop by on Sunday for a book giveaway. Have a great weekend!

I May Have Finally Found a Dining Room Light. For Real This Time.

The first time I saw this Jean de Merry light was when I had lunch at BG Restaurant in Bergdorf Goodman in New York several years ago.

They are all flush mounted in the restaurant but it usually hangs from a chain:

I was reminded of it more recently when I saw it in the 2010 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles’ Christmas House:

unnamed

When I saw it, I realized that it is exactly what I’ve been searching for for my dining room without even knowing it.

So I’ve been frantically researching it and I finally found it at a great local showroom called R Hughes. I went to see it yesterday and I liked it even better in person:

R Hughes, by the way, has the most exquisite things housed in a fantastic space at White Provision. If you’re local, I highly recommend a visit. Here’s just one shot of the showroom:

My only hesitation with the light is that I’m afraid I’m going to start seeing it everywhere and then I’ll start hating it. This is definitely an investment piece so I can’t be swapping it out 6 months from now!

Oh, what to do, what to do …..

Art Walls, Part 7

You know I love all kinds of art walls but if I had to choose a favorite today, I would choose one with plenty of monochromatic art and gold frames.

You just can’t go wrong with that combination. You can see the entire FTRB art wall collection here.

Breaking the Rules: Oversized Lighting

I don’t follow rules when it comes to decorating spaces; I never have. This room is a great example of why we should do away with the one about how big a light fixture should be. You’ve seen those formulas, right?  If you applied them here, this would be all wrong but look how great this room is. Proportion is important, of course, but for me, it’s something I know in my gut, not something done with mathematical formulas. What about you?

(Photo: Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles)

Art Walls, Part 6 (I Think)

Just when I think I’ve seen all the art walls out there, I find another slew of them. Here are some more to add to the FTRB collection of art walls, starting with the most unique one I’ve seen yet:

I would love to see all of these drawings up close!

If you see any great walls I haven’t posted yet, send them my way to be included in the next roundup!

Dining Room Light Options, Part 2 + DIY Fail

Okay, I’ll try to make this long story as short as I can. Almost a year ago, I saw the Comet Pendant Light on Horchow:

I was in love but I was wondering whether it would give off enough light. I then saw on Janell’s blog that she had bought it so I emailed back and forth with her and decided it could work. But when I went to order it, it had disappeared from their site. I was bummed but then promptly forgot about it (ADD at work) and the search continued.

Fast forward to last week and Aimee from the Functional Space posted about chandeliers and she included the same one, only from a different source. I emailed her a bunch of questions which she was nice enough to answer and then just out of curiosity, I went back over the Horchow site and they have it again too.

Seeing this light again made me see the chandeliers I posted last week are going to be too heavy. The room definitely needs something airy and light so I did some more looking. Here are two others that are similar and could work:

Glow Lighting 16-Light Starburst.

LBL Lighting Confuzion 12-Light Chandelier. I think the arms are flexible so I could shape it into a prettier shape.

What do you all think of these? Oh, and as for my DIY pendant, as with 99% of my DIY projects, it went terribly, terribly wrong.

Exhibit A:

I told you all I don’t do DIY. (If you haven’t been following and are wondering what the hell this is, I was trying to make this pendant light.)

For what it’s worth I do know where it went wrong. I didn’t apply the Mod Podge evenly and I clearly didn’t put enough on certain spots even though I used the whole tub.  I could try to salvage it but I just don’t have that kind of patience.

So that’s it for me. I’m throwing in the towel once and for all.

Chandelier Picks for the Dining Room

Well, that string pendant DIY project is not looking so good. It’s not 100% dead so stay tuned for the results.

In happier news, I think I’ve found some lights that may work in the dining room. They all come in different finishes like bronze, silver, nickel, etc. so you’ll have to imagine them in different colors.

Breck 12 Light from Arteriors is my current favorite.

Venetian 16 Light from Circa is a close second.

Reed Eight Light from Circa is nice and simple.

Double Twist Five Light from Circa is the oddball of the bunch.

What do you think?

I’m Going to Make a Light Fixture. Yeah, That’s Right.

A few days ago, I came across an old post on Leah’s blog Moss Eclectic where she showed us a pendant light she made with just some twine and modpodge.

Unbelievable, right?!

Those of you who’ve been reading my blog for a while know I don’t like DIY and DIY definitely doesn’t like me. But this project has inspired me mainly because I still haven’t found a light for my dining room and something like this (in white) could be the ticket. The directions also seem really easy.

So today yesterday, I went out and got myself these:

I found some white twine at Home Depot so I’m hoping it works as well as the sisal.

Leah also used a toy ball but I want mine to be bigger so I dug my old exercise ball out of storage. (It might as well get used for something cause it sure ain’t seein’ no exercise!)

I hope to have something to show you by the end of the week. (It needs a couple of days to dry.) Let’s hope this doesn’t end up in the “DIY Project Fail” file.

Musical Rugs

Rugs are one of the things that gets moved around the most in our house. I just can’t decide which ones should go where. The rug that has stumped me the most is a large floral Aubusson type of rug that my parents gave us in their “Great Downsizing of 2010.” It looks a lot like this one in color and pattern:

(This is Kate and Andy Spade’s apartment which I love to pieces but had refrained from posting because it’s been all over the blogosphere.)

So my rug has been in the living room, the dining room, back in the living room, the bedroom and is now in the dining room again. I’m just not feeling it in there mainly because it’s pretty traditional and the dining room furniture (also received as part of the Great Downsizing) is also very traditional.

Looking at this room makes me think maybe I should try it again in the living room which is mostly gray, white, cream and black. Of course I can’t remember what I didn’t like about it there when it was there the previous two times(!) How bad is that? Please tell me I’m not the only who’s moved something around so much that they’ve lost track!

I’d like to say a big thank you to those who voted for FTRB in the 2011 Homies! If you’d like to add your vote for FTRB or any other home blogs, you can do so here. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!

I Don’t Have a Princess Complex, I Just Really Love Crowns

I’ve always had a thing for crowns. I love all the beautiful styles and the history they evoke. I’m sure that the fact that they are frequently found in Swedish design has something to do with it too. So while I loathe the idea of accumulating more stuff, I’ve been thinking about starting a collection. To start off, I just found the this one at a local antique mall.

While there are exquisite antique crowns that are real treasures like this $2,050 one from Source:

I’m thinking about a collection that’s just for fun and not too serious or costly with pieces like this:

$96 from RianRae

and this:

£24.67 from My Mirrors.

Crowns have definitely become popular over the last couple of years and while they haven’t been done to death (yet) I’m afraid that day will come. But trends come and go so quickly these days, that’s true for just about anything. So I’m not going to worry about it and just do what I like.

The ones above and below are from a wholesaler and there were no published prices so I have no idea if they would fit into my “just for fun” collection but I really love them.

So, have you seen any cool crowns around lately?

Wanted: A Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree

I’m not exaggerating when I say I have killed every plant I’ve ever owned. So I made peace with the fact that our house would be one without greenery a long time ago. But then I saw the fiddle leaf fig that Emily Henderson used in her winning design on Design Star last season and I’ve been wanting one ever since.

Here’s a closer look:

Since then, I’ve seen them pop up in stylish interiors all over the place, making me want one even more.

I just love their leaves and their shape.

And they’re supposed to be pretty easy to grow so I’m willing to give it a go.

I think they just make all of these rooms, don’t you? If anyone knows of a source in Atlanta, please let me know!

Sew, A Needle Pulling Thread . . . . .

My mom is here visiting and one of her many, many skills is sewing. I’m talking on an haute couture level here. So I’ve enlisted her to make all kinds of things for the house while she’s here: drapes, slipcovers, pillows ….. because to say that I didn’t inherit that talent would be an understatement.

The worst grade I ever got in school was in Home Ec. (That’s how old I am – we actually had to take a class called Home Ec in like the 7th grade or something.) One of the things we had to do was to sew a stuffed animal. Mine was supposed to be a whale but it looked like a really toothy monster and everyone made fun of it for years. (No wonder I never learned how to sew. I was probably traumatized on some subconscious level.)

Anyway, I haven’t gone near a sewing machine since but I have been collecting fabric and textiles for years. So has my mom and together, we’re up to our eyeballs in fabric – it’s not at the point where “Hoarders” is going to call but we have a lot so we decided it was time to start making stuff. You know, because we don’t have enough to do(!) Who knows? Maybe I’ll finally get over my contempt for the sewing machine in the process.

Do you all know how to sew? Stay tuned for the progress and in the meantime, have a great weekend!

I Really Need to Stop Looking at Wallpaper

I don’t have enough walls for all the papers I love not to mention the two wallpaper projects (“Views of Paris” paper for the butler’s pantry and re-papering the powder room) that still need to be tackled. But I just have to add Schumacher’s Fern Tree to the list.

I love its neutral hues and the pattern has just the right amount of visual interest. Another reason to love Kelley Wearstler.

And remember a few weeks ago when I told you I came home with a sample of Hicks’ Hexagon?

I was going through my files the other day and found these two old photos from Domino (no, I’m still not over it) and they made me want to use it even more.

Someone please stop me. It’s torture.

Ultimate Wish List Item: deGournay Wallpaper

If you’re new to my Ultimate Wish List series, it’s where I catalog all those big ticket items that I’ve loved forever that I know I want one day. Earlier Ultimate Wish List items can be found here and here.

I’ve blogged about deGournay wallpaper before and how I didn’t know how I would ever choose a pattern from all the choices. Then last week, I opened up the new Elle Decor and there it was:

right in the table of contents, before I even got to the features. After I stopped hyperventilating, I went straight to the article and I was so happy to see another shot of the space:

It’s a very traditional, very deGournay pattern but the two-tone feels fresh to me. I also love that the two tones happen to be blue and gold.

Ignoring the walllpaper for just a moment, how much do you love that gold light fixture, those chairs and the massive mirror? I’m dying over here. It’s just all too good.

Ochre Chandelier Revisited

Last year, this room made the rounds in the blogosphere and I instantly fell in love with the chandelier.

It’s the Arctic Pear Chandelier from Ochre:

Here’s a smaller version:

When I saw it in this amazing home in the current issue of Elle Decor, I fell in love all over again:

I’m still looking for that perfect dining room light and this could very well be it. Doesn’t it just make the room? (And how much did you love this entire loft?)

I’m One Step Closer to Window Treatments

Are you sick of hearing about my poor neglected windows yet? I know I am. Well, we’re all about to be put out of our misery because I’m weeks away from finally having some window treatments!

First, let me say that shopping for window treatments is no joke. There are way too many options out there and consequently, way too many ways you can go terribly wrong. Also, if you want to do it right, windows treatments are a pretty significant investment so it’s important to take the time to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want.

Well, after reading countless consumer reports and reviews and driving everyone around me crazy I finally decided on custom roman shades from the Shade Store. (For the record, I am not being paid in any way for this post.) First I ordered a bunch of samples.

Then I placed them all over the place to see how they looked in different rooms at different times of the day.

Then this weekend, hubby and I measured all the windows. Being the smartie that he is, he made this chart to record all the measurements and keep them straight:

Pretty clever, eh? Did you know you should measure each window in three spots vertically and horizontally for the best fit? I didn’t.

So with the windows measured and the materials selected, it looks like the window treatment saga is finally coming to an end. HALLELUJAH.

P. S. Did I use the term window treatments enough in this post? Sheesh. What a goofy term . . .

Pretty Things from Denmark via Ireland

I received this beautiful package from my friend Lorna yesterday. In case you don’t know about Lorna and her charming online shop, Garrendenny Lane, you should. It’s named after a lane running through her family farm in the Irish midlands where her business is based. (Doesn’t that sound so idyllic?) My package included a stack of UK magazines (including a copy of Munster Interiors in which FTRB was featured this summer) as well as an adorable floral luggage tag and napkins from the Danish company Greengate. Here are a few pretty pages from Greengate’s winter catalog:

For great gifts and home accessories from Greengate and other European companies, visit Garrendenny Lane. She also has a blog full of design ideas and inspiration.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Very Busy & Gorgeous

I obviously have a thing for walls with lots of things tacked to them. I think this may be the prettiest one of all. (The blue sofa may have something to do with it too.)

Remember the busy wall from a couple of months ago? I’m still loving that one, too.

It’s a short post today but I’m also making my monthly appearance at Seattle Homes & Lifestyles where I’m discussing something else on my mind lately: piping. I’ll meet some of you over there!

Secrets from a Stylist Has Spawned My New Obsession

HDSW1_Guest-Bedroom-Dresser-Mirror-Vignette_s3x4_lg

By now you’ve all heard that Emily Henderson won HGTV‘s Design Star and now has a show called Secrets from a Stylist. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I loved the first episode. I think she is adorable, I love her style and it’s the freshest program I’ve seen on HGTV in a long time.

HDSW1_Dining-Room-Drop-Leaf-Table-Windsor-Chairs-2_s4x3_lg

There have already been a lot of reviews so I’ll leave it at that but the reason I’m bringing it up is that I haven’t been able to stop thinking about these lanterns:

Picture 117

I actually gasped when she approached these.

Picture 116

She removed the white fabric and painted the black part white like so:

ians house after

but I actually would like one as is. I’ve seen a lot of imported lanterns in my day but I’ve never seen one as gorgeous as these! The black and white is perfect! I am obsessed!!! I want. I need. I must have. (Emily: I saw that you walked out of there with two but I only see one being used in the house so if you have a spare . . .)

Has anyone seen these in the Atlanta area? Or anywhere driving distance from Atlanta? Or how about some good import stores in the area that I can look into? Help me, please, someone . . .

Reader’s Question: Wall Hangings from the Rug Company

Today, we have another reader question. Both the Q&A are short and sweet.

QUESTION

What a nice blog you have, I have a question, have you seen this Union Jack, any chance you know where to buy it?

Picture 100

Have a great day!

vh, Cecilie

ANSWER

The wall hanging is called “Jubilee” and it is by Lucinda Chambers for The Rug Company.

And even though Cecilie didn’t ask about these, I thought I’d also point out that the Rug Company makes other hangings that you’ve probably seen a lot. Like “Vishnu” by Matthew Williamson:

Picture 101

“Love Too” by Paul Smith, made famous in Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment makeover in SATC1:

Picture 102

I think I like the first “Love” by Paul Smith even more:

Picture 103

You can see the whole collection of wallhangings here.

If you have a design question or would like my opinion on something for possible posting here, please click here. It may take me a while but I’ll answer as many as I can.

I’m Back + This Wall Of Postcards Is Bananas

Hi, everyone, I’m back! What a fantastic trip! Once I get organized, I’ll share a few photos with you but for now, let’s start the week off with this bit of amazingness:

insideout

I have a massive postcard collection that I started decades ago and I’ve always wanted to cover a wall with them like wallpaper. I think this is the best example I’ve found yet. Isn’t it incredible? Or does it give you a headache? I wouldn’t do it in the living room or anything but maybe somewhere small like the office area in the kitchen or the laundry room. I’m also lusting after the Chesterfield. I’ve had a thing for Chesterfields for a very long time.

I’m looking forward to catching up with all of you but before I go I’d like to say a big thank you to all my fabulous guest bloggers. It was great to have you here! Thank you!

Ultimate Wish List Item: Beni Ouarain Rug

elledecor1

The second item on what I call my Ultimate Wish List is a Beni Ouarain rug. (If you missed it, my first item is here.) Beni Ourain are a tribe from the Atlas Mountains and you can read more about them and their weaving tradition here and here.

elledecor3

I have been coveting one of these for some time but given their white background and hefty price tag, I would have a heart attack every time my dogs got near it. (They seem to find a way to get their paws muddy at every turn.)

kranzbach

Here are two rooms I posted before with one of these rugs. I still love them both:

Picture 56

Until I figure out a solution for the muddy paws, I think it’ll just have to stay on the List.

So what’s on your wish list?

Bulletin Board Project + Ramblings

It all started with a beautiful linen covered bulletin board that I saw at the Historic Concepts office when I went on my blogger outing last month. (Sorry I don’t have a photo of it but trust me, it was gorgeous.) I decided then and there that I had to have one for my inspiration board. I asked about it and was told that it was made out of homasote. I had no idea what that was so I did some research and learned that it’s an insulation/soundproofing material made from recycled paper. It seems Martha Stewart made a homasote bulletin board years ago (of course):

ms

You can find her how-to here. I also found two blog posts about it here and here,

A couple of weeks later, I went to Home Depot and no one knew what the hell I was talking about. So I did some more research and found it locally at Capital Materials. They were so nice and helpful! Homasote comes in 8′x4′ sheets and I had it cut into two (5′x4′ and  3′x4′). The large piece will be for my inspiration board in my office and the smaller one will go in the office area of the kitchen. Here’s the large piece sitting in the garage:

DSC_5549

It’s not much to look at now but it will be once it’s covered in some pretty fabric. This gave me a good excuse to go fabric shopping so off I went to Lewis and Sheron. I found this for the large piece:

DSC_5539

For once I didn’t hesitate. I knew I wanted something blue since I’ve been working with a yellow and blue palette in the office. I’ve also been wanting to do something orange and blue and since it is going to hang by the big orange chair, I can get that out of my system too. (The blue is more navy in person.) I thought the pattern might be too busy at first but most of it is going to be covered in stuff so I think it will work out.

This is what I found for the smaller piece:

DSC_5540

I’m crazy for burlap these days and I am dying over this blue-gray color.

I hope to have these done within the week and will take photos along the way. If anyone has done something similar and has tips, please share. Wish me luck!

Also, Kelley Moore is featuring me today in her Ramblings series. Please visit for some well . . .  ramblings about me. Thanks, Kelley!

Ultimate Wish List Item: Serge Mouille Lighting

solidfrog

I think most people keep wish lists for their homes. I do too but I also have another list that I call the Ultimate Wish List. The difference is that my wish list is for things I currently want whereas my ultimate list is for things that I know I want at some point that I don’t have the need/space for right now. They are also things that I’ve loved for a very long time.

First up on the list is Serge Mouille lighting. It’s a classic and as with all classics, you really can’t go wrong with it.

7da4c113133alcove

It’s also a good excuse to post some of my favorite rooms again.

elledecor

It seems like whatever the topic, I can find a room in Jenna Lyons’ house to illustrate my point.

domino

Seriously, I’m almost embarrassed at the number of times I’ve posted some part of her house. Not too embarrassed to stop doing it though(!)

I’ll share the rest of my Ultimate Wish List in the coming weeks.

A Roundabout Post About My Quest for Window Treatments and an Atlanta Field Trip

Confession time. I’m totally embarrassed to admit that we still have temporary paper shades up on the second floor of the house.

80

As usual, the reason for this is indecision. I have not been able to make up my mind about what type of window treatment(s) I want. About a month ago, I thought I finally knew. I was going to go with white plantation shutters. They’re very Southern and would be in keeping with the style of the house.

BRASFIELDPARK-lg

But then a few weeks ago, I went on a very cool little outing to a gem of an Atlanta neighborhood called Glenwood Park, organized by our man-about-town, Terry of the Architectural Tourist.

FRONT2H-lg

Terry posted about our tour here and Angela of the Painted House wrote one here. Weeks ago, I might add. (Better late than never, right, gang?) Emmie of Aspirations of a Southern Housewife was also there. Three of the loveliest people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting in Atlanta, by the way. But I digress. The windows.

SIDEWALKPERPECTIVE-lg

As part of the tour we visited several homes for sale with realtor Bruce Gaunt and one of the houses had . . . plantation shutters. While they looked good, they blocked out a lot of light even when open, making the house feel dark. So after that, I began rethinking the shutters. More time passed.

But I’ve reached a point now where I can’t stand it anymore. So I spent a good part of yesterday looking at all the options and I think I’ve decided on roman shades. Amanda Nisbet makes great use of roman shades in a lot of her spaces:

Picture 75

Picture 77

Picture 76

Picture 73

I’m leaning toward simple white ones and bringing in pattern/color through drapes but these examples are pretty attractive, too. Off the topic – I’m dying for the light fixture in the last picture, too.

Thoughts?

Union Jack Fixation

littlebluedeer

I have always had an affinity for the Union Jack motif. Yes, it’s trendy but what can I say? I’ve always liked it and am pretty sure I always will. I actually wrote this post last week but thought it might seem really unpatriotic to post it right before Independence Day(!)

whitewander

I’ve talked endlessly about the Vivienne Westwood rug for the Rug Company:

9

Words can’t express how much I love this but the truth is, I would have a hard time making it work anywhere in my house.

hoh

But I still want some form of Union Jack and have been looking for just the right thing.

hoh2

I thought I had found it in these tea towels:

cox

And I think I’ll still get one (aren’t they cute?) but a couple of weeks ago, I found this tapestry pillow on Etsy . . .

il_430xN.152778788

and I knew that it was exactly what I wanted. It arrived last week and I’m in love with it. Ah, the joy a pillow can bring.

So how was your holiday weekend? Mine was great – it was so nice to be home for a change! We moved some furniture around (no, really?), cleaned out a bunch of junk and started hanging some art. This place may actually be habitable soon(!)
