Kitchen Office Update + a $250 Lighting Giveaway

***This giveaway is now closed.***

Having lived in as many homes as I have, the one thing I’ve learned is that it takes time to fine tune your spaces to fit your lifestyle. Take our kitchen office for instance. When we bought the house, it was described in the listing as the Bill Paying Station. The thought of a dedicated space just to pay bills was really amusing to me on so many levels.

After I stopped rolling my eyes, I thought since I have it, I might as well make the most of it. So I basically thought of it as the Kitchen Office and decorated accordingly. But it always looked and felt forced to me – like it had to be a certain way because it was in the kitchen. Well, more and more I’m throwing out the should’s in favor of doing what works for how we live. So I thought about what we really used the space for and the main things were recharging all our gadgets, dropping off keys and mail when we came in, housing all my cookbooks and yes, paying the occasional bill that can’t be done online(!) So I reorganized to accommodate these things and got rid of anything superfluous.

I also freed up a shelf for my calendars and notebooks so I can jot things down as they come up, made the cookbooks easier to access and brought in some things I want to see everyday like photos, fresh flowers and travel souvenirs. Even with just these little changes, it works and feels so much better now. I’m especially loving this wall of mementos. It’s just a start; I have plenty more things to add!

Everything else has stayed the same. I’m still loving thepink Milo Baughman chair:

Frenchie bookends:

and Tord Boontje light:

And speaking of lights…..

It’s giveaway time!

I needed a desk lamp for this space and the sleek Pixo task lamp from was perfect.

I just love how minimalist it is. It takes up virtually no space and just blends right in. It can move over 900 degrees in several directions and the LED lights casts a really nice warm glow that you can dim. It even has a USB port in its base for charging all your devices. is giving one lucky reader a Pixo lamp in Glow which is a vibrant, almost neon yellow-green color ($256.71 value). It’s a fun color that will brighten up a desk or bedside and its minimalist style will work with just about any style of room.

To enter for a chance to win, all you have to do is leave a comment on this post. Leave an additional comment if you post about the giveaway on Twitter or Facebook. A winner will be chosen at random and announced here next Wednesday, February 19. Open to U.S. residents only. Good luck!

My teenage daughter would love this lamp on her nightstand. She would say it is “Tots Adorbs”!!! AKA – for adult speaking individuals, “totally adorable”.

  2. Nicole Phillips says:

I am loving your little kitchen office! Definitely much cuter and more fun than a bill paying station :) That Pixo lamp is a great addition, also. I love that it takes up such a minimal amount of space!

  3. Justine Ashworth says:

I always look forward to seeing your redesigned spaces. That Tord Boontje yellow light is fantastic! And so is the Pixo task lamp! Please enter me in the giveaway :)

  4. Robin says:

Charging all those little “helpful” modern life devices can be pain in the neck and create lots of clutter … love that this little lamp could help out charging a phone. Smart – looking and function.

  5. Karen W says:

I can’t live without a kitchen office and yours is amazing! Especially like your Tord Boontje! I love it all and am wishing to win the Pixo! Thanks for the chance!

  6. Celia says:

Oh my gosh… love, love, love that chair and actually the whole office. It looks great. Love this lamp too — we had an Ikea lamp in a similar shape which was solar – powered but sadly it did not last very long.

  7. Erin Ellis says:

I’m on my way to vote – but first I had to say how awesome that lamp is! It would be perfect in my art studio. Thank you for the fabulous giveaway!

This would be awesome since I;m currently re-doing my office and couldn’t seem to find unique lighting until now. Thanks for the chance!

  9. Beth says:

Love it! Thanks for the giveaway! Chartreuse is one of my favorite colors.
Love your posts, Ally. I’m always so happy to see a new one!

  10. Emily says:

Ally, you are such an inspiration. That lil’ space is sweet. (And I LOVE Ottolenghi). My home office — that has to do real serious duty for my overly regulated business — is a disaster in a space about 6 x8. Oh, how I wish I could fly you here to Napa Valley to make this office fabulous :) Lol.

  11. Gwen says:

What a great lamp! I don’t think you can ever have too many lamps, and I could really use something a bit more modern in some of my spaces…this certainly fits the bill.

That chair is just fabulous too. Thanks for the chance!
