Seriously Contemplating a Leather Couch
You won’t believe any of what I am about to say but….. (1) I am seriously thinking about getting another(!) sofa for the family (2) I am 99% sure I want it to be leather and (3) I don’t want it to be a chesterfield.
The main reason is I really want a different look for the family room. It’s the most casual room in the house (it’s where we spend most of our time) but lately I’m feeling like it’s a little too casual.
Since the couch is the most important piece in any living space, it really sets the tone and I finally came to terms with the fact that I’m not going to get the room I want working with what’s there now.
The reason I want it to be leather is I am so tired of having to cover up the sofa for the Frenchies. I swear they shed enough hair in a week to make at least 10 more Frenchies. Even with a cover, I’m constantly having to vacuum or roll a brush over it to tackle the dog hair and I am so over it. For real. I think it would just be so much easier with a leather couch. I even said as much in my first month of blogging over four years ago!
I always assumed if I ever got a leather couch it would be a chesterfield. Lord knows I have talked about them enough. But these days I’m really drawn to more straight lines like in all of these. I really like this one:
I like it for the shorter back, placement and height of legs, the arms that aren’t too thick or thin, the right shade of brown and amount of wear. But I think this is from a store in Australia so not an option.
Another one that I like a lot is this one that I found for a long distance client a while back:
But i’s not an option either because it’s in Canada. (It’s from Urban Barn for you Canadians reading).
I did find this one at Montauk Sofa that looks very similar though:
So it’s a possibility but I want to do some more looking before making any decisions. If you’ve seen anything along these lines, let me know! All this is to be continued, I’m sure.

Hi Ally. Do your dogs get up on the back cushions of your sofa? I ask because I have 3 Schnauzers (couldn’t live without them!) and, while I don’t have the shedding issue, they do like to nap on the back cushions on our sofa, which leaves me constantly reshaping them. So I’ve just about decided I have to have attached back cushions instead of loose on the next one I buy. What has your experience with this been? And good luck on finding the right one!
Hi, Dave, I don’t have that problem with mine as they don’t/can’t really climb up on things. Something you could consider if your cushion covers are removable is getting foam cushions for the backs as they aren’t as pliable. Your dogs would probably not want to climb on them and even if they did, they wouldn’t lose their shape. And I feel the same way – couldn’t live without my pooches!
Hmmm… smart idea; thanks!
Go for it! I used to think leather sofas were for bachelors only. But when my boyfriend and his Pomeranians moved in, I realized that they’re perfect for dog owners, too. I wish I’d had one years ago, when my cat started treating my sofa like her own personal grooming tool. :-p
I like the slouchy, unstructured leather sofas best.
With leather and dogs, you’ll want to keep their nails clipped and smoothed. With cats, you never want leather at all. If you have trouble believing that – come see my sofa — it’s an expensive disaster!
Sooooooooo cold these last few months, I do love mine, but brrrrrr
How about some sheepskin and throws to warm things up?
I’ve always loved that Montauk ad – a leather couch has never looked so inviting!
Sounds great! We have leather and I keep saying I can’t wait to make a switch haha. Two things – like Pam said, it is always COLD to sit down on! I have two throws that I put on the seat and on the back so I don’t have to feel the chill. My husband doesn’t seem to notice it though. And we have a dog (whose nails we don’t clip, oops!) and a cat (indoor/outdoor) and we haven’t had any trouble with them on the leather. So that’s good!
Good luck!
I’ve been searching for the perfect leather couch too! I love the one in the 5th photo but from my research that company doesn’t ship to the US. I saw a similar one that Haus Interiors posted on their FB page but they didn’t know the source. I submitted it to AT to see if any readers know: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/help-identify-this-leather-sofa-good-questions-183993. Closest match is the Sorensen from Restoration Hardware. Looks nice but I’m not a fan of the curved arms..
It sounds like we went through the same search. I’ll let you know if I find anything closer!
Hi Ally,
I believe the pics of the one from Australia are from a general furniture/homewares store we have called Freedom Furniture. However, this one I found online appears to be exceptionally similar and is from the US. I’m not to au fait with your state abbreviations but I’m gathering OK is Oklahoma? Anyhow, here is the link: http://edmondfurniture.net/products/Four-Hands/fhand/vmra02w512.html
Hope that helps.

Thank you so much, Sandy!!! I think that is the one! And yes, OK is Oklahoma.
Hi Ally,
I am going thru the exact thing with our family room. It looks like a disaster because that’s the place our big dog spends the most time & 2 of our 5 cats (yes, I know, it’s a real menagerie at Peacock Pavilions). But anything we buy will need to be custom. I wonder what they put inside the leather cushions. Do you know?
Hi, Maryam! Depending on the company, they often give you a choice of either down or foam or some combination of the two. If you’re going custom, you should be able to choose the exact amount of firmness you want – which is always great. BTW, it’s hard to imagine the lovely PP looking like a disaster.
They all look beautiful, but love the 6th one the most.
