Willem de Kooning and Diego Rivera at MoMA

Art is one of my greatest sources of inspiration and Willem de Kooning is one of my favorite artists so I’m really excited to finally see his retrospective at MoMA today.

Of his vast body of work, I think his landscapes are my favorite.

As a bonus, there is also an exhibition of Diego Rivera’s murals created for MoMA in the 1930′s.

I’m a huge fan of his as well. I even traveled to Guanajuato, Mexico years ago to visit Museo Diego Rivera, the house where he was born that is now a museum. How’s that for devotion?
I’ll be continuing my gallivanting around New York the rest of the weekend then when I meet you back here on Monday, I’ll be kicking off a week of celebration for FROM THE RIGHT BANK’s three-year blogiversary! I can hardly believe it’s been three years! So please join me next week for all the fun and until then …..
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Standing before a de Kooning is a religious experience.
i love all the yellow!
I saw the deKooning show at the end of September when I was in town for a birthday party. The show is awe inspiring. deKooning has long been a favorite of mine. While a painting student, I would study the portraits he did in the late forties and fifties.
I too went to Guanajuato to see Diego Rivera’s work. I’d be fibbing if I said that was the only reason why I went to the area…. we were staying in the beautiful town of San Miguel de Allende.

That’s where we stayed too!
Love SMA!
I admit that I am jealous. Have a wonderful time! It’s been too long since I’ve been to MOMA! Happy New Year!
Oh, I agree, love the work of Willem de Kooning! When I studied painting at SAIC I’d spend hours looking at his canvases in the museum.
Have a Happy New Year! Janell
Holy cow Ally, another to add to the list of similarities as de Kooning is one of my very favorite painters as well. And yes, that includes his late work. How jealous I am! But happy to know that you are taking in all of that inspiration for the year ahead…
Can’t wait to hear what you are doing for tomorrow…As you well know, NYE is tricky, tricky in NYC. Remi and I are doing what we always do, staying in, cooking up a storm and pushing back all of the furniture after dinner to dance!
Bisous et franchement, Bon Année copine!
Ooooh, I’m so jealous! What a treat to see these two artists’ work in person.
Have you read de Kooning: An American Master by Mark Stevens? If not, I HIGHLY recommend it. So, so good.
Have fun in NYC–what a fun weekend to be there! We NEED to catch up when you get back in town.
I haven’t but now I will – thanks for the recommendation. And yes, we are long overdue for a catch up. It’s been far too long!
Happy New Year to you, dear Ally! Enjoy NY! I am not envious at all… (I get to celebrate in Bellevue…)
Cheers to a fun and creative 2012!
Look forward to a chat soon.
Love, Mon
I love Willem de Kooning too, a true master of colour and I’m green with envy! I’ve never been to MoMA sadly, maybe one day *sighs heavily* Thanks for sharing – Happy New Year x

have a healthy and happy new year! this fresh new start is so much fun and i think this year holds amazing possibilities. enjoy!
How do you know when it’s a landscape????
He did many series of landscapes in the 1950′s and these are part of the series.
Dreamy. I am a big fan of both artists, too. Thank you for sharing the beauty.
Happy New Year!

Beautiful paintings! I’ve been enjoying NYC the last few days. Nothing like it!!
So jealous, there are so many incredible exhibitions going on in NYC right now! I am in the midst of a Frida Kahlo bio, so would the Rivera exhibition would especially interest me. Though I’ve always had a soft spot for deKooning, as well.
