On the Hunt: Gold Flatware

Thanks for the well wishes and emails yesterday. I’m feeling a little better overall but the sore throat persists. It’s been years since I’ve had one and it’s just killing me but let’s turn our attention to something more pleasant, shall we?

Like gold flatware. I’ve been thinking about it for at least a year now and I think it’s time to get a set.

They’re not limited to over the top tables anymore.

Look how nicely they work in all of these very different settings.

I want a very simple, streamlined set as opposed to something ornate (obviously). I’ve narrowed my search down to these so far:

First, I’m filling my house up with brass accents and now I want gold flatware. What is this? The ’70′s? Stop me if I ever start on avocado green appliances and home perms! Scary!

P.S. If you haven’t already left a comment on my Ideabook at Houzz, I would really appreciate it! Each comment is a vote for me and if I win, you could win a $250 gift certificate to any online retailer of your choice. Merci beaucoup!

Ally, I love gold flatware and have an entire monogrammed set of 106 pieces (vintage and found with my monogram, M!)! Perhaps not as modern but extremely well made & the original flatware is Dirigold. Unlike most of these modern sets, it’s gold all the way through and lasts forever. Many of the new sets are just gold coated. Take a look at the sets in Zara Home, for exp, and you will see that they are already scratched in the bins and you can see the white metal underneath! You can still find sets on ebay at extremely reasonable prices. Just a thought! (And greetings from Marrakech.)

Hi, Maryam! I actually did see some Dirigold on ebay so will need to do some investigating. Yours sound lovely and I would love to see them – in person at PP! :)

We had gold flatware that we would bring out for the holidays each year when I was growing up. It was always a special moment to open up the box and start polishing the spoons and forks while we set the table. Not only were they beautiful, but the memories are unforgettable. As a child I always knew to expect a good dinner and lovely guests each time they were used. It even because a bit of a code in my family..we were always to be on our best behavior whenever when they were used. You’ve got some really nice choices so far, but I think the ones from Gretel or Gilt are my favorites.

Hi, Ellen, thanks for sharing your story! It was similar at our house but sadly my mom gave her gold set away a while back – back when gold seemed so gaudy. So sad!

All of those pictures are great. I bought 2 packs of gold flatware a while back from Target. Its an iffy result if washed in the dishwasher. However, a nice traditional in the sink job may help.

Totally on board with gold flatware.

Maryam Id love to see your gold flatware. Sounds like a winner.

Love how glamorous gold flatware looks on a table. My good friend wanted some for Thanksgiving but didn’t want to go crazy, and got the best deal on ebay for a large set, she paid like 110.00! It was beautiful…..something to consider!

Sore throats are the worst. I suffer for a while then I break down and gargle some warm salt water and it does help. Gross but helpful.
I agree w/ Christine above, the Barneys and the Blomies are my faves. I love all the different settings. Great variety!

There is a reason why pride is one of the sins. I was so puffed up with my ready response until I read Maryam’s and it was like letting the air out of a balloon. SSSSSS. But we do have a set that you would love–our very first thing we EVER bought on ebay (and this was when no one in France would dare buy anything there, very skeptical): a huuuge set of gold flatware from SIAM. Little apsara dancers. The box still smells like the exotic wood it is made out of. When you come for dinner, we’ll get them out, along with the Baccarat!
Old Uzbek cure: vodka with salt. It works.
    Bisous!

I LOVE my gold flatware, found at auction last year for almost nothing!! Lucky me! As for the sore throat, I can’t be without my apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, two or three times a day. The perfect cure all. A tablespoon or two in a few ounces of water. Works like magic! Hope you feel better soon.

    Hi,
I just wanted to concur with your comment on La Dolfina’s blog-Lose the spotted dogs. They are wrong and I was wondering if anyone would mention it. I am not a frequent reader, so I didn’t want to be critical, but it certainly needed to be said and you said it politely.

    • Ally

Hi, Natalie, you should know that I didn’t leave a comment on that blog. I think you clicked on the commenter’s profile which shows she follows my blog. I thought I should clear that up. Thanks.

This gold flatware is just what I need to add some class and spirit to my celebration. I find the set in Bloomingdale interesting. I am used to simpler design which is why I want to try their design especially that I find them different.
