Big Reveal: The Living Room

At long last, here is our living room! As the formal living room, it doesn’t see much action so I decided to use it as a living room/library.

The built-in was the perfect place to house all of my art and design books and with all the natural light, it’s a great place to read. These shelves get tweaked constantly but here is how it looks currently.

I was in the mood for a pretty bare mantle this weekend. (This is another thing that gets tweaked almost daily.)

The antique baby grand player piano that came from my parents:

I used to play as a kid but can’t anymore so it’s nice that it can play itself! (Growing up, some neighbors thought it was me playing when they heard it playing on its own and they would gush about how beautifully I played. Sometimes, I just let them think that!)

The art is from various galleries, antique markets and ebay. I’m always on the hunt for nice pieces so I envision this wall getting completely filled out eventually.

So that’s it! Next up, the master bedroom. It’s time to whip that room into shape once and for all!

This room is far too pretty to go unused! Bravo Ally for pulling it all together in a way that is so uniquely you. I love all of it and am giggling because I had just said to Remi yesterday that if only we had the space for a piano (we so don’t). And you know that I want your chandelier too. Mince…I am going to have to plan a breakin!

    Lovely living room Ally.

Did you have the paneling done on the walls? It give the room so much character. The new bookshelves are fabulous.

It looks soooo good! I don’t know what I like more…the gallery wall, the library, or that lucite coffee table! I also love that you have a self-playing piano too. What a great way to have pretty music playing in your home.

wow congrats on this beautiful room. The light is wondrous and your antique baby piano is so special. It looks like a very inviting space to spend an afternoon poring over your library.

GORGEOUS!!! I love the white walls with the orange chair and colorful books. Please come to San Francisco and help me style my bookshelves :) Really, if feels so modern and fresh, but still cozy and happy!

Love, love, love the living room, particularly how you mixed mod (like the peekaboo coffee table) with all the traditional elements of the room. And love your blog (even before the In Style press!) I’ve been considering a shag area rug for our family room for months now but still have reservations. After seeing it in your LR, however, I think I just need to have one (byw, did you move this one from your FR or is this a second one?). Do you find yours difficult to vacuum? (I don’t want to have to rake it). Did it shed a lot? (I expect some shedding with any new rug but this scares me a bit). Any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks!

Hi, Vicki, thanks so much! I don’t remember if I ever had this in the family room – I could very well have since I move things around so much! I just have this one shag and it’s the one from Ikea that I’ve had for several years. It’s held up well, doesn’t shed much at all and vacuums fine. (I have a Dyson because of all the dog hair.) If you’ve been wanting one for a while, I think you should go for it since it’s inexpensive and therefore, not a huge commitment. It feels nice underfoot in the winter too. :)

It’s VERY beautiful! I like that everything is carefully placed and no clutter. :) I love the detail of your home itself,…the windows and moldings. Breathtaking home!

Beautiful space Ally! (as I knew it would be) I love that the move to GA has put you in more traditional surroundings and you have brought such a fresh modern touch to it all. I know it feels good to have the room checked off the list. Of course, is a room ever truly done!
Congrats on the InStyle mention too. That’s awesome!

Thank you, Aimee! That means so much to me because as you said, I’m definitely in a more traditional setting and that’s been a real challenge. And you’re so right, nothing is ever really finished, is it? :)

Darling I am sorry about the lateness of my response to this wonderful reveal.
I love what you have done and the soft creamy colours are beautiful. You have created an inviting, stylish and warm room with so many lovely vignettes to feast the eye at. Just stunning Ally!

    Hugs from the North.

I can’t believe I didn’t see this earlier!!! I was in Disney at the time so that’s how I missed it. :(

SO lovely and sophisticated–just like you. I want my house to look like that, too, when it grows up!

    (You trickster with the piano!)
