The Miller House

One of my favorite tv shows is CBS Sunday Morning and yesterday, they featured the Miller House in Columbus, Indiana which totally blew me away so I just had to share it here.

Designed by Eero Saarinen for the industrialist J. Irwin Miller and his family, the house was completed in 1957 and occupied by the Miller family until 2008. The house was then donated to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, along with most of the original furnishings.

Conversation pit aside, look how fresh the design looks 50+ years later!

Interior designer Alexander Girard designed many of textiles specifically for the home.

The house is now open to the public for tours and if I were anywhere in the area, I’d be there in a heartbeat!

I found all these photos on Indy Star and a great site called Mid-Centuria.

I also found this video:

It just goes to show great design never goes out of style.

Great post Ally!! We saw the Sunday morning show too and we were eeking in delight. The Miller house is the epitome of mid-century modern genius. I’ve coveted that conversation pit as long as I can remember & vow that one day, I will have one. My Uncle (an architect) & Aunt do have a smaller one in their Minneapolis home. It must of kicked-off my admiration of the ‘pit’. I can never see this home too much. Thanks Ally my dear and hoping all is very well in Atlanta? “It’s getting hot in here”!! Back to summer heat… xx

Ally I missed the show…can you see me swooning! I love this home! The color palette is as fresh and unique as if it were designed today! The pillows and textiles are superb!

    Hello!

I love this place! So mid-cent but without the heaviness that came with some of them. Eero Saarinen is a genious in my book – from his industrial and furniture designs to his architecture. Stunning!

    xx Charlotta

P.S. did you see Monika’s beautiful home in Rue?! She’s so clever!!
