Scary To Do List

You may remember that when we moved into this house, I decided to take a slow and steady approach to decorating it. I wanted to take my time and get things right instead of rushing to just get it “done” like I had in all my previous homes.

Well, it’s been just over a year and I think I have been taking things a little too slowly. The main reason for this is my inability to commit (to colors, patterns, etc.) But I’ve decided enough is enough. I’m at the point where I know the house really well – how we are using it, the best furniture placement in all the rooms, etc. – and it’s time to wrap this up! There will always be tweaking and reworking (of course) but it’s time to get the following things done:

Dining Room

  • Find a light once and for all.

Living Room

  • Reupholster brass chairs. (Decide on fabric. The hard part.)

Family Room

  • Reupholster antique chairs. (Decide on colors and fabric. Again, the hard part.)
  • Decide on and get window treatments.

Powder Room

Master Bedroom

  • Find ceiling mount light for entry.
  • Get drapes?

Master Bath

  • Order x-stool.
  • Find new shades for sconces.
  • Find a towel rack.

Guest Room 1

  • Find nightstands.

Guest Room 2

  • Reupholster Baughman chair. (Choose fabric.)
  • Get shades.
  • Hang art.

Office

  • Hang art.
  • Finish organizing.

I’m one of those people who works better under a deadline so I’m giving myself one: June 1 to complete all this. Care to take bets?

Have a great weekend!

It’s a long list but I definitely think you can get it all done- I did some rudimentary math and figured you have to check off about 5 a month- totally doable. I know it will all be amazing and can’t WAIT for June to see it all!!!

You’re so brilliant! I hadn’t even thought of it like that. That makes it sound less scary (sort of). Thanks, Christine!

So, with a June 1 deadline, does that mean we’re all invited over on June 2? Just take it one step at a time. I’m pretty confident you will blow us away with what you accomplish over the next few months.

    Happy weekend!

Wow, that is a LOT to do before June 1… especially the way you travel! But making the list will surely help focus you.

Where I struggle most is the finishing touches. I can get 80% done pretty quickly, but its the last details that Always hang me up!

You are really smart to break it down by job because then when you start ticking things off you feel less overwhelmed. We have a lot of visitors and I think it’s great for motivation. I suggest you invite lots of people to visit you this summer:)

Best of luck with your task. (I’ve been putting mine off for 13 years.) I have no doubt you will get it done. Pace yourself, but keep going forward.

Have you thought of a towel warmer for the bathroom? What a luxury I consider this to be. I have one that I love. It’s better to get the type that you place the towel inside of as it warms the entire towel. The free-standing warming rack only warms the area where it actually touches the towel.

    Best wishes to you!

I’m sure whatever you choose will be beautiful. I’m pretty much the most indecisive person ever, so I know what you’re going through.

There’s still a lot to be done around our townhouse, but now that we’re in the process of looking for a new house, it doesn’t make sense to “finish” anything. But it kills me looking at a half-finished space.

Good idea on the deadline. Maybe that’s what I’ll do when decorating our next home sweet home. I used to work in newspapers and it would keep me motivated for sure!

Scary?! Just fun!!!! Just focus on the most important things first ! I want to see your dining light, your powder room with the wall paper up and your art wall – 3 things that will make a big difference off the bat.

    Happy weeekend to you.

Don’t be too hard on yourself Ally…these decisions are always tricky because number 1, you care, and number two, they’re permanent (well, semi if you don’t mind spending extra cash). When building our house the permanent decisions had me paralyzed more than not…going with the gut was a huge help, and your “gut” is so spot on, you can’t go wrong.
Remember to have fun and best of luck!!

I have a frightening to do list as well – nothing gets done without a list. I’m betting on you – you are girl who seems to accomplish what you put your mind to!!

I can hardly wait until we’re at the point where I can have a to-do list for our new place, wherever that may be. I’m still getting rid of stuff from our current place before the move. Love the bookshelves in the photo! Just what we need! Good luck with the deadline!

I am the master of all lists! I really believe in them and in the power of crossing things off as you go..a huge smile creeps across your face and you swell with that unmistakable feeling of accomplisment! Give yourself credit, you have a game plan, have made your list, checked it twice and you are ready to go! Three steps in the right direction……I am jealous that you are there, I feel like we have a looong way to go…but just keep trudging ahead…good luck! Thanks for stopping by yesterday!

Only 1 year? If it makes you feel better Ally, we’re about to start our renovations and it’s been nearly 4 years! Your list is great. I have no doubt you’ll pull it all together before June. Amanda xx

my gosh, you sound like me! i have a long list of things i’d still like to do in my apartment…which i’ve lived in for nearly 4 years. i’m so extremely indecisive when it comes to selecting things for my own home (like picking a damn fabric to recover my dining chairs already!). i’m with you on taking time to make the right choices, however, at some point, you just have to go for it :) good luck with everything – i can’t wait to see how it all comes together. xoxo – julie
