Ideas for a Dressing Room Redo
I don’t know why but I keep coming up with new ideas for my dressing room. To recap, it currently looks like this:

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m considering changing the wallpaper to this darker one:

Thanks for all of your feedback on it. I’m still undecided and really appreciate hearing your thoughts.
The other change I’m considering is the dresser. The white one you see is the basic Ikea Malm. I’ve always liked it for its simplicity and clean lines but lately I’ve been wanting an upgrade. The other day I saw this chest:

It’s covered in grasscloth. I. Love. Grasscloth. So that made me think instead of getting a new dresser, why not try covering the Malm in grasscloth? It’s the perfect size for the space (which isn’t easy to find) and is in really good condition. So, if I were to change the wallpaper to the black one, I think a gray or tan on the dresser would look good:

The final thing I want to do is get some sort of ladder because I can’t reach the upper shelves. Something like this:

I’m short, too, Eva. Â I know I don’t want to hassle with installing rails. The room is broken up with a door in the middle so rails wouldn’t work anyway. Â So what I want is one that is fairly light that I can move around myself. I have no idea where to even start looking so if you have any ideas, please share!

Love these ideas Ally! The malm covered in grasscloth would be beautiful with the darker wallpaper.
I just recently put grasscloth in the back of a bookcase for a client and I’m hooked. I am constantly looking for things to put grasscloth on now!
Can’t wait to see it!
This is my grasscloth post…

Love that, Lori! What a difference it made!
love the chest Ally! how unique and it would work so well in your dressing room, cant wait to see the finished project
I love both your current wallpaper and the one you are considering. The only thing to watch for is that the new one will make your room darker. Do you have any natural light in the closet?
That’s a good point. There is some natural light but I think I would have to switch out all the bulbs to a higher wattage.
I am about to cover my bedroom side tables in grasscloth- like you, I looooveee it. I think the lighter grasscloth would be fabulous with that gorgeous wallpaper and love the idea of a ladder. I can’t wait to see the redo- it’s already gorgeous but like you, I love a little change from time to time and what a fun place to do it- I’d kill for a dressing room!!!
I have to say, while what you have now is really pretty, I love that darker wallpaper with the grasscloth dresser! So chic! A ladder would be really cool too.
Gray grasscloth with dark wallpaper – all the way!
I love the darker wallpaper and if you’re going with the darker paper, then definitely go with the new grass-cloth-y looking dresser. So pretty.

Hi Ally,
I ran across your blog last night and of course, I love it already! Anyway, I saw your plea for a source for a ladder and since it sounds like you’re ok with Ikea pieces (especially light, white Ikea pieces) you should start there. The Inreda ladder is about 86″ tall, white, and priced at a very reasonable $50. Hope that helps!

OMG, that is PERFECT! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I like where you’re going with this Ally! I gotta say I think the dark wallpaper would be smashing in the closet…since it’s a smaller space the “darkness” would not be overwhelming. Then I would go with the tan grasscloth. It would definitely be a fun change because it’s different from what you have now, but made with things you love!
I love grasscloth…I am always amazed with Ikea re-dos, can’t wait to see the finished project if you decide to go ahead with it… A ladder in a dressing room always screams luxury to me, love it!

I really like the idea of switching the wallpaper to dark. I love small dark rooms, especially a dressing room. I think it would feel quaint and romantic. As long as you have adequate lighting.
And tan grasscloth all the way!

Love it all! Grasscloth, THAT wallpaper, the chest! And, oh, how I could use a ladder. I use the most un-fabulous step stool. That ladder would be so much more chic. Oh well…I think I’m waiting to remake the closet into something fabulous and deserving of said ladder!!!

If you love the grass clothe idea and want to get rid of the dresser, doing it yourself is a great idea ! Much more satisfying if it works out beautifully too.
I think the ladder in the photo is good but is in the way .. I have considered the Library ladders that are attached to a brass rod that goes along the top.
I have a dressing room ceiling of 15 ft in height. My ladder is not high enough

You can always put in 2 rails and 2 ladders.

ally, your closet is the inspiration for my new closet. hubby and i are relocating from seattle to dallas soon. closets are sooooo much bigger there!! well, then again, apparently everything is bigger in texas.
i hope to find a wall in the closet to paper and add a dresser. it just “finishes” the closet. oooh, and a chandelier! pam

That’s awesome, Pam! The houses here are so much bigger too compared to Seattle. I still can’t get over how much space I have. You are going to be in heaven!
