Breaking the Rules: Oversized Lighting
I don’t follow rules when it comes to decorating spaces; I never have. This room is a great example of why we should do away with the one about how big a light fixture should be. You’ve seen those formulas, right? Â If you applied them here, this would be all wrong but look how great this room is. Proportion is important, of course, but for me, it’s something I know in my gut, not something done with mathematical formulas. What about you?

I don’t follow rules either…I make my own rules. After all, aren’t rules made to be broken. LOVE the oversized lighting! xo

C’est une très belle pièce… j’aime les beaux et grands lustres.
bisous
I never follow the so-called rules. If we all followed the rules then every home would look almosst them same.

I so agree. Was recently reading about The Rules…
The newly purchased, oversized, chandlier for my dining space, just would not work. According to The Rules, that is.
Thanks for the post..hope others will take note. We must experiment and go outside the box, so speak, or it will be boring, boring, boring!
the successful (and personal) style comes always from your heart.

rules like that are definitely made to be broken. it looks amazing.
I am all about mixing lighting, using bigger than what’s expected etc. etc…why not? Bigger is better is far as I’m concerned- especially when it’s a gorgeous light like the one in your inspiration shot.

i don’t even know the rules…but i LOVE ME A HUGE LIGHT! when we were shopping for lighting, my husband would point the largest, theatre sized fixture and ask me if I thought it was too small
its big but its so light and doesn’t take up much space…still the person who bought this to try in the space must have some guts!!!!!!!!
ramble ramble ramble…..I LOVE IT!

Amen! This huge fixture looks amazing, and something out of scale or something that just doesn’t “match” is sometimes exactly what a room needs. Rules were absolutely made to be broken!

We are in COMPLETE agreement… we love large fixtures. They make a statement (and oftentimes they’re the “room-maker”)!

I completely agree…..sometimes rules are made to be broken. Sometimes that’s how things stand out.
Exactly like this room……I went to the showhouse and when I walked in this room I was like WOW, what a great idea. And the space was actually a small combination LR/DR. I loved the huge chandelier and it worked because it has so much visual void. It was the perfect example of a rule broken looking amazing!

Gut and instict are my best friends…when I’ve not listened to them, frustration and sometimes ‘permanent damage’ has ensued (certain cabinet proportions come to mind as well as pot lighting!).
This light fixture absolutely makes this room…it’s fabulous and so delightfully *out of proportion*!!

I first spotted the “larger than expected” light fixtures in Charlotte at Cindy Smith’s shop, Circa. And, though I had never seen it done before, I loved it.
So, I think the take away is try something different. Your gut will let you know if it works or if it doesn’t.
I love this look above!!

I agree, sista. That chandelier may be a little big, but it totally works! I love it!

This was one of my favorite rooms at the showhouse. The room itself was pretty small, but the effect of the oversized light fixture was just fabulous! It was the show stopper for sure.
Shouldn’t the rules be . . . that now matter the size, color, etc. it just has to work? Leaving room for variation and interpretation! I think sometimes the best rooms have the most unexpected elements.

almost… anything goes… if it is cool of course!
how are you???? xoxo
Hey if we can wear white after Labor Day who needs rules for lighting?
Love it–even if that tilt shift is so extreme that it is making me dizzy!

I’m all gut, no math when it comes to interior design. Math takes the fun and inspiration out of it for me. Though my gut does say I’d like that oversized chandelier better without the shades. Wink!

I adore these and get hypnotized every time I see one in an Atlanta showhouse. Gotta get one for my bedroom. There is usually a guy at Scott’s who has a tent outdoors. His fixtures are surprisingly reasonable, too!
