New Palette for the Living Room: Oranges and Blues

My beloved orange chair has been in five different rooms in this house, looking for the perfect place to fit in. I think I’ve finally found it: the living room. This of course throws a big wrench into my plans for a neutral living room but what else is new? So my latest thinking is to use the orange and different shades of it – rusts, corals, etc. complemented by a good dose of navy and inky blue against the gray, white, cream and gold that’s in there now. Here are my inspiration pictures.

This is a really unexpected combination for me – not one I would have ever used before. It seems I’m having a lot of surprising ideas lately.  Your thoughts?

    Smashing, Ally!

I gave a presentation a few months ago at the Nordic Heritage Museum in Seattle about design. I showed room no. 3 as an example of room perfection in combining old with new and making it perfectly current with colors and textures! Yes, to orange and yes to warmth! Throw a little bit of blue in and you will have a winner. Very inspirational.

Happy new week to you my friend.

Loving that color palette. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! I was obsessed with orange in high school, and 10 years later, it’s quickly making a return as a favorite.

i just want to turn on some marvin gaye, take off my shoes (and bra) pour a glass of wine and just stroll around these rooms. theyre all so comfortable, organic and beautiful.

you always pick the freshest combinations, ally. I really like the orange and navy – you know my take is just a little different – a combination of umber and gray. I think my eye gravitates toward ‘muddy’ tones – but I really appreciate the ‘clearer’ combo of orange and blue.

and I REALLY LOVE how your new logo flips from right to left…very clever, girly!

I think it’s brilliant! Really love the way the colours work in the first photo and the one of the bedroom. I think its the layering of all the different shades of orangey-red and the dark-grey blues that I’m attracted too. Really nice and fresh looking!

I love the orange. My girlfriend and I are currently working on an orange room upstairs (all our rooms are referred to by color). We have beautiful wood work in our house and we are using mahogany accents. It is coming out beautiful. Ours all started with a chair also :) Great looking room!

can’t wait to see the room Ally!

I’m using a similar palette in my baby’s room, mostly due to the fact that I’m decorating mostly with lots of things we already have. Never thought I had so many navy, burnt orange and yellow things, and not really used to decorating with those colors. But you’ve given me some awesome inspiration. I love the earthier vibe of some of your pictures.

I’ve really been drawn to deep blues lately in interiors – something chic and soothing about it. And I love that so many colors work with it – like orange – so fresh and springy!

Orange and blue is my absolute favorite color combo. I never get tired of it. That Elle Decor image with the tapestry hanging above the bed is to die for. I love the slate blue/orange combo in that room.
