Wanted: A Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree
I’m not exaggerating when I say I have killed every plant I’ve ever owned. So I made peace with the fact that our house would be one without greenery a long time ago. But then I saw the fiddle leaf fig that Emily Henderson used in her winning design on Design Star last season and I’ve been wanting one ever since.

Here’s a closer look:

Since then, I’ve seen them pop up in stylish interiors all over the place, making me want one even more.

I just love their leaves and their shape.

And they’re supposed to be pretty easy to grow so I’m willing to give it a go.

I think they just make all of these rooms, don’t you? If anyone knows of a source in Atlanta, please let me know!

Hi Ally – snap! These photos caught my eye too and I bought just such a fig tree back in November I posted some photos if you want to see.
I love indoor trees – so 1970′s. And these trees seem to need no watering I left mine with no water for 2 weeks whilst I was in hospital and it was fine. So it is your kind of tree! Xoxo
i almost bought one a few weeks ago! they had them at my local home depot! i’m in florida, so our climate is obviously warmer than you guys, but it’s worth a peek…
btw love, love, LOVE your blog.
Ally,
I think any of your larger garden centers would have or could order one for you!! I love the look!
I do have A Great New Giveaway from Blydesign!Come and enter!

Great article, it’s good to see someone recommending plants as a way to decorate the home – often overlooked. Thanks for sharing.
fantastic! Strangely enough I prefer the sparse ones, as they look more sculptural to me.
Just do a little research- whether they need sun or shade, how much water etc… maybe you’ll have better luck this time?
Ally….I have gotten them at the Pikes by Lindberg and I got one at Home Depot also!!! They are easy to grow and you can pull the leaves off the lower half to get that sparser look!
hmmmm… i think i need one of these!
Ally! I have wanted one for the longest! They are so sculptural. So glad Sherry left a comment because I had asked her about one I’d seen on her blog. Antique dealer friends of mine have one at their shop – found at a home depot garden shop! I’ve been looking for one ever since but with no luck. Let us know if you find one – I’d travel for one.
I love these. You may kill plants but I can’t seem to kill them. I keep them barely alive so that they look so bad I want them to die! Good luck finding yours!! I agree that Home Depot may have them. They seem to randomly get shipments in of tropical/indoor plants.
They’re beautiful! I love house plants in woven baskets.
They really are so bold and graphic, aren’t they? Totally dramatic. I will be curious to see where you end up finding one.
Thanks for all tips, guys! I knew you would know.
OK, I need to know if you can keep that alive once you get one. I have the same syndrome – killed everything I’ve ever had (plant-wise).
It certailny is a very attractive plant!!
ooh i want one too….but it needs to be easy..i just killed my succulents…how is that possible?
I special ordered a Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree from Florida and had it shipped to Canada. It is flourishing beyond belief. If it can survive here I’m sure it will be just fine in Atlanta!
I have wanted one of these too for the longest time! I was thinking to try Pike’s and if they didn’t have one maybe they could order one.
Mine did beautifully outdoors but once it needed to be sheltered from the cold, i will admit that my beautiful tree ended up dying on my watch…and i DO have a green thumb!
I would love one too, but currently my home feels a tad bit like a jungle with my ficus, zz-plant, enormous jade plant, rose attar geranium, cold weather pomegranate tree, dumb palm, pineapple palm and countless pothos…and I have a tiny home. Yikes!
Good luck and if you have a shady home zz plants are soooo easy to keep alive…you basically ignore them and every once in awhile give them water. They are pretty cool looking too!!!
xx Danielle
You are not alone with the black thumb! I kill everything I try to grow. I do love those. Definitely makes a statement!

Love these plants…they add just the right touch in each of these rooms!!
Hi Ally,
I loved that room when Emily set it up – so fun to watch the evolution. And yes…Fiddle Leaf Figs are so cool, definiely making the rooms above.
Congrats, too on your big shout out in the brand new LONNY!!!! So excited to see you recognized there.
xo Elizabeth
Haha! We just picked one up last week!

Yes, let us know about the upkeep, I have the same problem…my plants live for a bit and then I go on vacation and they are goners. Love those trees!

What a great eye you have to notice these!
I love them too. I’m going to include this post in my Sunday roundup. Thanks for the inspiration!
I’ve been obsessed with these for awhile too! I even wrote about them awhile back http://www.kerrisdaledesign.com/confessions/they-call-me-the-killer-of-plants-that-is/
Haven’t yet found a good local source for one, but I haven’t given up

Ugh…I love there trees! I want two one to flank each side of a large picture window I have in my breakfast room. Nothing here in Ct right now though..gonna wait till the spring. So easy to take care of too I have heard. I have a black thumb not a green one. So this is encouraging.
Hi ally! just found your blog through lonny. that is really exciting that you were featured, congratulations. I am also in atlanta, so it is great to “meet” a local blogger.
I always see these trees at home depot on ponce and want one, unfortunately i have no room. i have about 5 million other plants in my place that had to come inside for the winter. its like a greenhouse in here. i would just call all the local HD to see if they have the fig. good luck!
Ally: I just did some research on these plants…..Did you know that they don’t “naturally” grow the way your pictures have them? They are bushy, all the way down to the pot, and I think any that you see in the store will be that way. The ones you’re featuring have been purposely left indoors and not pruned back,s o that they will develop the one tall stem. If you do prune them, you get a bushy plant! Just thought you might want to know!

Thanks for all the tips and words of encouragement, guys!
escapade: Stop. It.
Lesley: Thank you! I’ll look forward to it!
Karla: Thanks for that link. You were really ahead of me on this!
vivacindy: Nice to meet you too. Welcome!
Libby: Thanks so much for all that research – it’s so nice of you to share all that!
That is what I requested as a Christmas gift from my mom (she asked). A Houston designer, Ashley Goforth, that Cote de Texas featured on her blog used them in several projects & they looked so great, & sculptural as you said. My mom did a search on the internet & found a kind of obscure florist that was listed in a Dallas suburb, so voila! I am so happy with mine! Glad to hear it’s hard to kill, too!
FYI, there is a “plant” version as well, so make sure you ask for the tree style.
Hey Ally! And happy new year!
Try Woody’s in Duluth. It’s about a 25 minute drive north of Atlanta — but you’ll be amazed at the low prices.

I think this is my favorite house plant. I live in Dallas and they’re often offered at several Home Depots here, but not always the tall ones. I’ve heard they need lots of bright light, so just make sure to put them in a sunny spot and I think you’ll be fine!
These really are a beautiful and unique plant! If you want to see a fantastic one that also, IMHO, “makes the space”, there’s an atrium in the Cleveland museum of art with an immense one of these, stretching well over a full story tall…if you’re ever in Cleveland–check it out, not just for the tree but because it’s a fabulous art museum, but notice the tree if you’re in there.
I will also testify that they are very, very easy to grow as well. They can tolerate full sun (if given adequate water) but they also are fairly shade-tolerant. I have one that gets no direct light and it is doing fantastic. People say they’re slow growing but I find if given adequate water, they grow fairly rapidly.
Does anyone know where to find a silk (faux) version? I’d like to put them in a beach house but don’t think real ones will survive being left alone so much in a cold house with no water during the winter. Thanks!!
