Musical Rugs

Rugs are one of the things that gets moved around the most in our house. I just can’t decide which ones should go where. The rug that has stumped me the most is a large floral Aubusson type of rug that my parents gave us in their “Great Downsizing of 2010.” It looks a lot like this one in color and pattern:

(This is Kate and Andy Spade’s apartment which I love to pieces but had refrained from posting because it’s been all over the blogosphere.)

So my rug has been in the living room, the dining room, back in the living room, the bedroom and is now in the dining room again. I’m just not feeling it in there mainly because it’s pretty traditional and the dining room furniture (also received as part of the Great Downsizing) is also very traditional.

Looking at this room makes me think maybe I should try it again in the living room which is mostly gray, white, cream and black. Of course I can’t remember what I didn’t like about it there when it was there the previous two times(!) How bad is that? Please tell me I’m not the only who’s moved something around so much that they’ve lost track!

I’d like to say a big thank you to those who voted for FTRB in the 2011 Homies! If you’d like to add your vote for FTRB or any other home blogs, you can do so here. Have a great weekend and I’ll see you on Monday!

[Addendum: It seems Apartment Therapy has changed how they are taking votes this year and it’s confused some people. So . . . if you’d like to vote for FTRB (and I hope you do!), here’s what you do:

1. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the comments – it’s really long – until you get to the comment box. (You do have to register or sign in with your AT user info. It’s really simple to register if you haven’t before.)

2. Then just type in the following:

Thanks for your votes and sorry for the shameless plug(!)

Guilty of this too…bet the rug would be fabulous in your living room. But I mainly love an aubusson rug in a room that’s a little more contemporary…fabulous juxtapostion!

..it helps that their is so much going on in this room that the rug just sorta fades to the back..all the books, lamps, tables, patterns cause your eye to travel around the room and not get caught up on any one thing…maybe if you added a few more accessories and some architectural pieces or vertical emphasis it will draw the eye away from the floor a little…but not knowing what your room looks like I’m only suggesting…let us know what you come up with…

Are you kidding, every rug and most of my furniture has resided in every room in my house, some more than once. Sometimes I do not like a rug in a room, so I try changing a few pieces of furniture and bring in a little different accent color and that changes the whole effect. For a dining room I would consider changing the fabric on the chairs to a more contempory style in darker complimentry colors to the colors in the rug and maybe some different artwork.

I am the same way with this one chair in my house…it feels like I move it once a week. I just can’t decide the best place for it. And, oddley enough we have decided to get rid of it because it’s not “us”. All that torture for nothing I guess. Oh well. Hope you find a great place for it.
I agree with earlier comment. The rug does seem to fade into the background because they have so much going on in their living room. It adds to the room but isn’t the focal point. Maybe you need to find a place like that!

    Have a Great Weekend Ally!

Shameless plug it is not, I’m happy to vote for FTRB! As for your rug, it sounds gorgeous and I’m sure it feels extra loved since it gets to see so many rooms of the house! Let us know what you decide. As for the home of the lovely Spade family, darn them…..

rug moving i could do….but all the furniture to get to it, maybe not so much.

i like the old rule that you start with the rug and build the room around it. but yes, you could choose a color in the rug and just bring in accents to pick that color up. since you already have the neutral ground.

    heading over to vote!

I agree with the other commenters who think the rug would settle happily in the living room mixing with the more modern pieces. The Spades apartment is indeed fabulous – and it was the same for me – just as I was about to post it, it was everywhere – immediately!!

    I can’t imagine a house without a rug.
I’m never tired of looking at the Spades apartment, that Aubusson is stunning.
    Love your post, as always.
    Hugs
