Union Jack Fixation

littlebluedeer

I have always had an affinity for the Union Jack motif. Yes, it’s trendy but what can I say? I’ve always liked it and am pretty sure I always will. I actually wrote this post last week but thought it might seem really unpatriotic to post it right before Independence Day(!)

I’ve talked endlessly about the Vivienne Westwood rug for the Rug Company:

Words can’t express how much I love this but the truth is, I would have a hard time making it work anywhere in my house.

But I still want some form of Union Jack and have been looking for just the right thing.

I thought I had found it in these tea towels:

And I think I’ll still get one (aren’t they cute?) but a couple of weeks ago, I found this tapestry pillow on Etsy . . .

and I knew that it was exactly what I wanted. It arrived last week and I’m in love with it. Ah, the joy a pillow can bring.

So how was your holiday weekend? Mine was great – it was so nice to be home for a change! We moved some furniture around (no, really?), cleaned out a bunch of junk and started hanging some art. This place may actually be habitable soon(!)

I never used to be that fond of the Britannia trend, but I am coming around to it – the more vintage the take on it, the more I like it, which explains why that cushion and the VW rug are my faves!

Okay Ally you are speaking my language here (you always do however). I've had a Union Jack addiction when it wasn't even cool, & it doesn't seem to wain. You fueled the fire today. I painted a wall behind our upstairs bar with a Union Jack but in a an unorthodox range of colors.I promise though it's not a themed room..yikes. We'll see what perspective home buyers think here soon?!. I can hear it now!

So glad you two had a great 4th weekend. Moving furniture and hanging art sounds perfect!

Love the pillow! I like the antiqued version of this trend. And a trend it is becoming I think…saw it on clothing while visiting a girl's clothing store with Isabella yesterday. Can't say I loved it in this form. Janell

I'm an Anglophile all the way, as it says on my blog profile : ) so I just LOVE all of these images! I'd also like to work in a Union Jack in addition to the Stars and Stripes somewhere in my decor, so these are some great ideas to get started. That V.W. rug IS gorgeous! Don't think Mr. Privet would go for it, though….

i absolutely adore this "trend" and think it's a fabulous way to add masculine appeal to a shared space. i can't wait to incorporate it into my boyfriend's new space since he just returned from six months in london and it'll be perfect paired with the vintage maps i've been collecting on his behalf. thanks for the lovely inspiration!

Appletree and Huma: We always want what we don't have, don't we? :)

Terry: That's a good point. I hadn't even thought of that but I think I might have trouble with that too.

erin: When it's worthy. I'm being soooooo slow with this house!

I bought that seller's Swiss Cross cushion last week and I love the quality… it's nice to see a New Zealand designer's work promoted – thanks, Ally. PS I live in NZ but am actually English — and I buy the Swiss Cross — baaahhaaa!

We Brits are historically far less reverent to our flag than Americans to theirs – it's more part of the family, so to speak. I have heard that in WW2 women sewed it into the crotch of their knickers…
