Where I’ve Been

Hi, everyone! As you may have gathered from the guests blogging here last week, I was away. Specifically, I was here:

www.fromtherightbank.com

in Zurich, hanging out on the lake, taking in the fantastic collection at the Kunsthaus and consuming copious amounts of cheese, chocolate, and a wonderful concoction called luxemburgerli.

They’re basically macarons but smaller – like bite-size – which makes it far too easy to pop one after another . . .

Even there, I managed to find another shade of gray to obsess over:

I was walking by this building and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw the color of the shutters. Glossy gorgeousness! I’ve uploaded a few other (iphone) photos from the trip to my Flickr account if you’d like to see more. I’d like to thank my wonderful guest bloggers for taking such good care of FTRB while I was gone:

I’m off to go catch up with you all but one more thing before I go: the Atlanta Homes article in which FTRB was included is now online here.

www.fromtherightbank.com

It asked the question, “What’s modern now?” and I’d love to hear your thoughts. What do you think is modern now? Happy Monday!

I am so jealous of your travels. The water, the town, the food, basically all of it!

I am a modern mix myself. My rule is for every piece of modern I offset it with a piece of old/vintage. I love the look of an antique desk with a cool ghost chair.

Hi Ally – I've missed you & hearing about your amazing life. Zurich has to be amazing? Congrat's on the Atlanta Homes article. Your ability to be on top of trends and great design is infectious. When asked about 'what's modern now' – what comes to mind is the trend to design a room that is 'not' trendy. The days of succumbing to what's hot is not. Having a good balance of timeless style, high-end mixed with low-end. Nothing contrived. I am still not over the dark walls.

Ally, welcome home and hope this week will be a great one for you xx

so glad your back and relaxed, i hope. i need a vacation with that lovely view and great food!

    congrats on being featured!

i think modern has evolved into a mixture of different eras all combined to make a lovely space. nothing too matchy- matchy.

Opening today's post was both a joy and a stab through the heart. We lived in Zurich for seven years and miss it very much. Be sure to check out the old town for great interior design shops like Zona by the Grossmunster and Pure Living near the Selnau subway stop. To see Zurich's (or Zueri for the natives) beautiful people, go to Terrasse at the end of the Limmat by the lake and have delicious coffee and dessert.

what a beautiful view of zürich! sorry I was confused on twitter and asked if you were back from paris :-) I did know you were in zürich, but I guess I subconsciously associate you with paris ;-)

    welcome back!

Katherine: I can see why you'd miss it! Zurich is really lovely!

kristina: I don't mind that association at all. :)

pretty far west: Stayed right on the lake so that was nice. Design-wise, it was just okay. And because it's Switzerland, it was uberexpensive!!

    Welcome back Ally!

You are too funny with your camera and your hunt for the perfect gray! (:

Well said in the article about the New Modern. "Less designed and more personal". Couldn't agree more!

And incorporating more vintage and antique pieces = better for the planet.

It's so exciting having a new bloggy friend to live vicariously through! Awesome trip ~ it all sounds amazing! I DID enjoy your guest bloggers while you were away and will click on the article, above, and see what nice things they had to say about you, there! What feels modern to me? Mixing what brings you pleasure in your home, despite eras or what goes with what. After all, it's the one place in the world where the number one person to please is YOU! xx Suzanne

Zurich?! I won't lie. I'm totally envious. Glad you're back safely. Loved your comment in the Atlanta Homes article. Modern is design that is personal and comfortable and well-edited. Hang on to what you really love and you'll really love your space…

How do you manage this glamorous life?! (Did you go to that Apt. Therapy Atlanta get-togther, btw?)

What is modern? I don't really know. I topped out at MCM :-) I guess modern is quirky – entirely NOT prefab, but well merged. Or maybe that's my definition of stylish?

You're back! Hope you had a fantastic time! (My sister is in Zurich and Amsterdam all this week – I have put in many chocolate requests…)

Modern today – I'd say it's all in the mix – a blend of old and new that tells your personal story. And thoughtful (greener) choices – we know too much know to just pick things thoughtlessly, I think it's important now more than ever that our choices reflect our values and ethics…
