Because I Don’t Get Enough Magazines

www.fromtherightbank.com

While in and out of airports recently, I’ve been skimming a lot of magazines that I don’t normally read. And much to my surprise, I’ve been really enjoying the past few issues of Traditional Home. I’ve also been meaning to subscribe to House Beautiful for a while now and the latest issue had me asking why I haven’t yet.

So I finally signed up for subscriptions to both. And when I finished paying for Traditional Home, up popped an offer for one year of Better Homes & Gardens for $5.  (Note to the marketing people at BHG: that gimmick totally works.) I couldn’t refuse, especially because Lauren just had her home photographed for the Christmas issue (isn’t that awesome?) so I would have bought at least that issue anyway.

I also looked into getting Canadian House and Home but it’s $50+ for a U.S. subscription and for some reason, I’m feeling cheap and don’t want to shell out that much. I may break down and do it though because I think it’s a great magazine.

I’m obviously still trying to fill the Domino void.  I don’t think it will ever be filled unless someone brings Domino itself back. How sad is it that I’m still holding out hope that that’ll happen?

So, what do you subscribe to these days?

I love buying decorating magazines when I'm in another country too. It's great to see the different styles people enjoy. I'm afraid I'm a bit biased to the Aussie mags subscribing to Australian House and Garden, Australian Home Beautiful, Australian Vogue Living, Belle Magazine, Queensland Homes and Inside Out Magazine. I will often pick up another one or two at the newsagent each month (because I have so much time to flick through them) and that might be Verandah, Traditional Home or some other US magazine. I love reading blogs but there's nothing like browsing through a magazine for inspiration.

I sometimes like Traditional Home, but ever since they put Jill Zarin's pad on the cover, I kinda lost a little respect for them!

To me, house beautiful has been tops lately! Elle Decor is always gorgeous, but for some reason house beautiful seems more accessible.

    Oh, domino!

house beautiful has become my favorite, ever since cottage living ceased. i get elle decor also, but it's often over-the-top for my style.

I have to give props to House Beautiful as well. Prior to 2010, I wouldn't give the magazine a second glance, but now, I eagerly await each new issue.

I'm not sure if you get Style at Home in the States (I'm Canadian), but I much prefer it to Canadian House and Home. Style at Home is more Domino-ish, if that's the sort of thing you're into. I'm devoted to Style at Home, but buy CHH once in a blue moon.

    Dear Ally,

I used to buy every interiors magzine there was until I realised that a lot of them use the same photographs and houses, and it was costing me a fortune . I found that, over the years, the quality of many of them had deteriorated so, I now only subscribe to Country Living and Jeanne d'Arc Living. I find that my friends and I buy a selection of them so, when I go round for coffee, I can read theirs and they can read mine!!!!XXXX

I'm still holding out hope as well. :0)

I've subscribe to HB for at least a decade now. I get Elle Decor too and I recently subscribed to Sunset, which although fine, does not feature enough interiors. I used to subscribe to the local magazines and might have to again to fill the void. At one time there were at least a dozen publications that would greet me at the mailbox monthly. Now,, slim pickings. Boo. :0(

Laughing over Sketch42 comment…funny but so true! I read NY Magazine, entirely, online! And the mags you just subscribed to above along with Vogue, and Elle Decor, read those off line!

What don't I subscribe to?! I feel like I'm always getting magazines and I just can't keep up with them anymore. That said, House Beautiful is one of my favorites – you won't be disappointed. I also really enjoy Elle Decor.

  9. my favorite and my b

i sat on the porch yesterday in this gorgeous 75 degree weather and looked through 10 dominoes yesterday. it was heaven. those magazines still inspire me. and in new ways every time.

and WHILE looking through them i realized that until someone brings it back *new and improved-if that's possible* the void will never be filled. sorry lonny. unless you get your shit on paper it's never going to be as good.
.-= my favorite and my best´s last post ..happy 101 award. for me. and you too bc i share my greatness with you. without you i am not awesome. =-.

I can't keep up with all the magazines! I take Dwell, Elle Decor, Modernist, Real Simple and regularly buy House Beautiful and Traditional Home.

If I could just settle on one style of decorating, I could cut out half!!!

One suggestion: If you live near a Half Price Book, they resell magazines and I can often find decor magazines there for half the price or less!

Ditto to MFAMB. I miss Domino. There was an energy to it that's missing in all other shelter magazine. I have a love/hate thing with Trad Home. Often, it's pretty lame. I read Elle Decor and House Beautiful monthly. But, my favorite one of all is Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. I strongly suggest that non-Atlantans subscribe. They have excellent content — a great mix of modern and traditional.

  12. The Buzz

Lonny, the online magazine, is one of my new favorites and it was launched by a Domino editor so you get the same aesthetic. Otherwise, it's Traditional Home and HB for me, too (although I skimmed through Better Homes at the dentist the other day and was surprised by the interiors!)

I should have mentioned I get Elle Decor and have a love/hate relationship with it.

Jennifer: So true! And I'm jealous of your selections. :)

sketch42: I did not see that! That would have made me rethink my order!

Chantel: I do like Style at Home. Maybe that's the one I should spend my money on . . .

favorite and best: I'm 100% in agreement. And I'm so jealous of your archives. Like an idiot, I threw most of mine away – before I knew it was folding. Still kicking myself.

susie q: I absolutely love AH&L – I only wish the issues were a bit thicker!

The Buzz: I like Lonny enough but to me online magazines are just not the same.

I still miss Domino, and I still am holding on to the hope that it will be revived. It was awesome.

My three faves, Domino, Country Home, and Cottage Living, all got canceled within months of each other…since then, I don't subscribe to any shelter mags. Maybe I should check out some of those mentioned above.

Just started getting House Beautiful a few months ago and am kicking myself for not "discovering" it sooner. Last week I subscribed to Veranda. A lot of Veranda doesn't for do it for me, but one or two issues each year have something I want to save. I figure a $10 subscription is the same cost as 2 issues at the book store, so I might as well get them all.

I have subscriptions to House Beautiful and Elle Decor… but I decided to let those lapse and splashed out for a subscription to LivingEtc. A US subscription is a pretty penny but I love that magazine like crack. Happy birthday to ME!

  17. Mustang Sally

Oh, how I miss Domino and Cottage Living. Now it's House Beautiful, Coastal Living, and Dwell. I take sneak peaks at Elle Decor at the newstand though and occasionally I buy Canadian House and Home, which I love.

Lonny is good but like someone said earlier, online design mags leave something to be desired.

  18. Averill

The last two issues of TH were AMAZING…so not what I expected. In fact, I just subscribed myself!

Don't have BHG yet but I'm always craving mmore magazines (it's an addiction, I tell ya!), especially midmonth when I've gone through all my favorites.

As for Canadian H&H…get the digital subscription. Way cheaper and as easy to use as Lonny (actually easier since they have a great index!).

  19. Marija

I seriously feel like I get every US interiors publication known to mankind. We get them in a 'trade bundle' at our office. Traditional Home is one that I used too look forward to. But I'm with Zhush and Sketch42 – Jill's pad on the cover was questionable. And I actually like Jil Zarin – I totally think we'd be friends. But the first thing I would help her do is re-decorate…

i could of written this post! everything you just said is exactly me – i subscribe to way too many magazines but just picked up house beautiful and have been contemplating traditional home…and, i just flipped through canadian house & home but can't fathom spending $50 (i mean, my elle decor subscription is $7 a year!)…anyway, glad to see i'm not the only magazine junky out there :)

I really enjoy Living Etc, and I've always thought House Beautiful has wonderful interiors. Like the rest of you, I miss Domino very much, and wish I'd downloaded all their archives! Marie Claire Maison is good, as well as both the English and French Elle Decoration. And of course Elle Decor.
