Future DIY Project
Remember I said I was getting a lot of furniture from my parents? Well, the lot included a couch and love seat that my mom really doesn’t want me to alter and I’ve been strongly discouraged from doing anything to the antique dining set but she’s okay with my painting and reupholstering these two chairs:
Aren’t they just ripe for a coat of paint and some fabulous fabric?
I posted some ideas for these before here and here are some more ideas along the same lines. I found these two on a blog called Let Your Creativity Flow:

and this one from a company called the Divine Chair Company:

I’m hoping to do my own Before and After like this one from Apartment Therapy:

I already have a killer tutorial on reupholstering from Raina (AKA the woman who knows how to do everything), so this will be my first project just as soon as I finish unpacking. Since that’ll be in like 10 years, I’ll have plenty of time to decide on a color and pattern. I was leaning toward white or black for the wood but lately I’ve been drawn to kelly green and electric blue. What do you think?

I love it! I like the white or black paint.

Nick Olsen did a piece Saturday on painting a similar chair flat white with "rotten stone" finish. It looks good – if you want to check that out. Good luck!

They are lovely chairs, and all the more impressive for having a pair. I'd go for off-white/ivory woodwork and a gala patterned/striped fabric for optimal happy chic, but I'd certainly admire the brave brightness of an electric blue as well.

the 3rd chair is unbelievable!!

The top two photos now have me looking around my house for something to paint and reupholster!

wow, ally I'm super impressed you're going to reupholster these chairs on your own! I took an upholstery class and it was so over my head — I think I could still only tackle the basic cover chair seat (that pops out) with fabric and staple gun.

i need that raina tutorial.
love the chairs ally. love them!! and that first chair with the gray pattern on gray background is quirky and pretty.

I can't wait to see what you do. Those 2 are ripe for some amazing transformation!
I totally get the whole "furniture guilt". I have loads of beautiful pieces from the parents that I'm not allowed to alter. One day…one day.
Well, if you get too busy to get to them you could always send them to me!! I would love love love to get my hands on them, what a fabulous pair of chairs with HUGE potential! Have fun with this project…Janell
You know I love that black chair, it looks so much like Maarten's Smoke Chair, which is a gorgeous-ass (and expensive) piece of furniture. But yes, I do need to finish my dining room chairs. Actually, I just need to do the box-seat cushions. And then I'll be finito.

I am suddenly picturing these with white wood and a smoky gray fabric. But I'm sure you will think of something more exciting than that. I think solids would just show off their nice shape. Can't wait to see what you decide!

Those chairs are going to be glorious. Since there are just two I think they'd be fabulous in the green and blue.
But I think you're going to cause a riot – I NEED that tutorial!
would love a link to that tutorial from Raina…just went to her site…omg, hilarious!
that divine chair company option is stunning! can't wait to see how your chairs turn out!

Oooo I'd like to see a kelly green or electric blue frame paired with a modern black and white patterned fabric.
Can't wait to see what you come up with. I would love to tackle a project like this someday.
I particularly like the one painted black. I love black — especially because you can repair scratches and dents with a Sharpie!!!

A Perfect Gray: Thanks for the tip – I'll check it out.
jen: Don't be impressed yet. It'll be a miracle if I actually pull this off!
Brooke: Loved your post today! The chair looks amazing.
Ms. Bright: I'm working on changing my mom's mind about the other pieces . . .
Update: Ms. Raina has graciously agreed to share her tutorial so look for it tomorrow!
can't wait to see what you do. i feel as though i may have a similar project in the future so i'll need some inspiration!
I like the all black look — nothing too frilly for such a feminine frame.
of course, all gold would be fab, too…

those are great chairs btw! i love the look of glossy black – always looks so great. but how fun would kelly green be? that would be so fresh and vibrant looking.

Great shape and you can do so much with them. You could do glossy black frame with white leather and nailhead trim. Can't wait to see what you do.
Oh boy are you going to have fun, especially given your inspiration images!!! Can't wait to see the after.
Well,
I thought that I liked them as they were but I love the ones that you have showm.
Isn't it good to have a mum with chairs like that to pass over to you ? !! XXXX

Can't wait to see what you do with these! I've not ventured into upholstering aside from recovering seat cushions so I'm definitely curious to see how hard you think it is to reupholster the backs of these chairs.

What a a great project you have waiting for you…so delicious to transform (dull) chairs into works of art using your own skills… Have fun when you get to them….:)

I have a similar project waiting for me to tackle as well. Thanks for the photo inspiration. I love the white paint with the grey fabric. I look forward to seeing what you do with your chairs. They have a really nice shape to them.

Navy blue – but a low lustre lacquer. Trust me, totally classic but still hip. And these days, I am all about adding re-furbished family pieces to make your space yours!
(thx for the sweet comment!)

There is so much you can do with those- I love that no matter what you do with them they have family history
Oooh I vote for kelly green!
.-= Jane Flanagan´s last post ..Lina Rennell =-.
The chairs are beautiful as they are, but, hmm…I think I would do them all black on black. Love the drama of it. So modern, too…
.-= Sarah Klassen/Haute Design´s last post ..A Treat for Two =-.
I love the wood as is but I'd change the upholstery for a bright large patterned yellow fabric or a dramatic black on black pattern
.-= moderenemama´s last post ..Snow Day 2010 =-.
I actually like the chairs as they are right now, bu i'm sure they'll be even more fab once you are done!

oh, I'm so jealous! I have been looking for just that style of chairs to give a makeover to, with a coat of black paint and a funky fabric… but alas, haven't found any at an accessible price
But I won't give up! And I'm really looking forward to seeing how your turn out!
