Future DIY Project
February 10, 2010 | 42 Comments
Remember I said I was getting a lot of furniture from my parents? Well, the lot included a couch and love seat that my mom really doesn’t want me to alter and I’ve been strongly discouraged from doing anything to the antique dining set but she’s okay with my painting and reupholstering these two chairs:
Aren’t they just ripe for a coat of paint and some fabulous fabric?
I posted some ideas for these before here and here are some more ideas along the same lines. I found these two on a blog called Let Your Creativity Flow:

and this one from a company called the Divine Chair Company:

I’m hoping to do my own Before and After like this one from Apartment Therapy:

I already have a killer tutorial on reupholstering from Raina (AKA the woman who knows how to do everything), so this will be my first project just as soon as I finish unpacking. Since that’ll be in like 10 years, I’ll have plenty of time to decide on a color and pattern. I was leaning toward white or black for the wood but lately I’ve been drawn to kelly green and electric blue. What do you think?

Nick Olsen did a piece Saturday on painting a similar chair flat white with “rotten stone” finish. It looks good – if you want to check that out. Good luck!

They are lovely chairs, and all the more impressive for having a pair. I’d go for off-white/ivory woodwork and a gala patterned/striped fabric for optimal happy chic, but I’d certainly admire the brave brightness of an electric blue as well.

wow, ally I’m super impressed you’re going to reupholster these chairs on your own! I took an upholstery class and it was so over my head — I think I could still only tackle the basic cover chair seat (that pops out) with fabric and staple gun.

I can’t wait to see what you do. Those 2 are ripe for some amazing transformation!
I totally get the whole “furniture guilt”. I have loads of beautiful pieces from the parents that I’m not allowed to alter. One day…one day.

Well, if you get too busy to get to them you could always send them to me!! I would love love love to get my hands on them, what a fabulous pair of chairs with HUGE potential! Have fun with this project…Janell

You know I love that black chair, it looks so much like Maarten’s Smoke Chair, which is a gorgeous-ass (and expensive) piece of furniture. But yes, I do need to finish my dining room chairs. Actually, I just need to do the box-seat cushions. And then I’ll be finito.

I am suddenly picturing these with white wood and a smoky gray fabric. But I’m sure you will think of something more exciting than that. I think solids would just show off their nice shape. Can’t wait to see what you decide!

Those chairs are going to be glorious. Since there are just two I think they’d be fabulous in the green and blue.
But I think you’re going to cause a riot – I NEED that tutorial!

Oooo I’d like to see a kelly green or electric blue frame paired with a modern black and white patterned fabric.
Can’t wait to see what you come up with. I would love to tackle a project like this someday.

I like the all black look — nothing too frilly for such a feminine frame.
of course, all gold would be fab, too…

Great shape and you can do so much with them. You could do glossy black frame with white leather and nailhead trim. Can’t wait to see what you do.

Can’t wait to see what you do with these! I’ve not ventured into upholstering aside from recovering seat cushions so I’m definitely curious to see how hard you think it is to reupholster the backs of these chairs.

Navy blue – but a low lustre lacquer. Trust me, totally classic but still hip. And these days, I am all about adding re-furbished family pieces to make your space yours!
