Bare Beauties (Light Bulbs, That Is)
February 8, 2010 | 42 comments

I think I have looked at a thousand light fixtures of every possible style in the past month and I began noticing (and loving) bare light bulbs more and more.

I think they really work well in large clusters:

Daniella wrote about this recently and included this beautiful photo:

and we had both seen this gorgeousness that nkp posted from the New York Times:

So I did a little research and came across these from Muuto:

and this classic from Rejuvenation:

with a single Edison bulb – what could be simpler or lovelier?

I’ve seen that trend more and more lately too. The clusters are really unique.

I really, really like them, particularly in the photo of the darker bistro space, where they are set off against the background (could be a cluster too). They have a look of falling objects – it’s super. I just opened new office premises, in a loft, and found an old, vintage “fountain” standing lamp, chrome with white, bare bulbs. I looove it in our reception and we get a lot of compliments from clients. oxo AJ

This is a look I like a lot, and to add to your inspiration pics, Ally, here’s one I like for its spidery grace:

I love the 3rd shot. The lamp is by Droog, a dutch company. In case you’re interested, here’s the link http://www.droog.com/products/lighting/85-lamps—110v/
About the other link I sent and you liked, I have to say I love it too. It’s called Romeo by Philippe Starck to Flos.

can’t tell if I love the NYT pic because of the colour of the walls, the chalkboard or the lights individually; but all together, it works – although I really like the second pic too – again, possibly because of the grey paintwork and orange chair rather than the single light bulb x

I love the simple Edison! I definitely agree these work best in clusters or groupings.

I was surprised by my affinity for the industrial look of the single or clustered bare bulbs as I’m a bit more of a traditionalist.
Last weekend I contacted a seller on Etsy who makes industrial pendant lights with a handmade cage over the bulb. The way the cross-hatching breaks up the light adds an intrigue to any space.
I, however, am trying to decide which bulb to ask the lamp designer to include in the final product. Anything other than the Edison bulb to consider?

The NYT image reminds me of fireflies at dusk. I have two bare bulbs in my kitchen right now…dimmer switch is a must! I would love to get the edison bulbs for them!

mise: I saw that one too – it really does look like a very graceful spider.
Eliana: I love that fixture so much! I’m thinking about it for another part of the house . . .
Lydia: Click on the Rejuvenation link. They have a section on bulbs – check out the Reproduction or Decorative categories in particular.

I love this look and really lobbied my husband to get the Pottery Barn Edison Chandelier when it came out a year or two ago. But he wouldn’t go for it.
These are beautiful. I’ll show it to my husband and see if I can get him to move…

I love the Edison bulbs, especially in clusters. I do worry that the light may be unflattering because it’s not diffused.

Isn’t it funny, Ally . I’ve had a bare bulb in a little lobby we have, for years, as I can’t find the right light fitting to go there, but now I think I’ll leave it. The ones you have shown look really good ….. I obviously was the instigator to the ones you have shown !!!! haha. XXXX

I love that look, Ally! I would just make sure that the bulb is not too cold and sterile looking. The second one is lovely! And I would sit in that blue restaurant all day long! Fun!
February 8th, 2010 @ 2:15 pm
I agree…they look great when clustered together (for some reason when I see just one it reminds me of being in a college dorm
!
btw…love that picture from the new york times…the lights look gorgeous hanging like that!

Louis W: Wow, they’re fast!
Jacqueline: You trendsetter, you!
Piper: I can totally see that. I think the rest of the room needs to be pretty polished to avoid that.

I like this a lot, especially in a very traditional space. It would be such a great contrast in your new, very Southern home!

These are so fun – actually, the first reminds me so much of fixtures in concert halls during the 70s – bare bulbs EVERYWHERE.
Loving your new blog banner, and welcome South!

Cute title! I like the look of bare bulbs, but in reality, I think they’d give me headaches. It’s not easy to look at a bulb without a shade.

Luv the pics! Where I live they will soon go from bare beauties to rare beauties. They’re banning conventional light bulbs all across European Union. I liked to used them in my designs… oh, well, life goes on!
