My Love Affair With Laundry

ms

I know I’m in the minority here but I actually enjoy doing the laundry. A neat pile of clean folded clothes and linens is one of those simple things in life that just make me happy.

I also attribute a lot of this to the fact that for most of my adult life, I lived in apartments where I had to lug my laundry down lots of stairs to a dingy basement or outside to a laundromat.

When we moved to Paris, it was the first time I had a washer and dryer in my apartment and I couldn’t get over how much better that made my life! For the first couple of months I swear it was all I could talk about. Can you imagine? I’m living in Paris and I’m going on about laundry?! That’s just how great it was!

Anyway, there is a little laundry room in the new house and I plan on dressing it up a bit. Nothing major – maybe hang some art, get a pretty cover for the ironing board, cute rug . . .  Why not spruce up even utilitarian spaces, right?

    heehee,

I too love to do laundry! When I moved into my house last year, that is the first thing I bought! Washer and Dryer. And I have been daydreaming about building out the basement to have a special laundry/ work-craft room!

beside other things down there , like a wine cellar and family entertainment room and work out area.

sigh but a pretty laundry room would make me happy!

    xx

I like to wash laundry – I could bottle up the scent of Tide Original and wear it as perfume – but I hate, hate, hate folding and putting it away. I have three kids, a husband, and a smelly dog, so there is a lot of laundry in my house. Thankfully, my oldest daughter is shaping up to be a laundry aficionado like you and has now does her own laundry.

I'm enjoying doing the laundry, but I'm not sure if I'd go as far as calling it a love affair… I mean, it doesn't give me goose bumps to fold the linens, but I really enjoy seing the work get done :) My new passion is actually vacuming! (lol)

Love the pics you posted! Am planning on redoing our laundry room this year, I'm actually thinking I want some really fresh wallpaper! Something fun and colorful :)

Right! Unfortunately mine is a disaster zone, but that’s what I get for having three young boys. Laundry is pretty much a never ending daily occurence around our house. But, I have a secret, I LOVE(!) to iron! Love it. Really. :0)

I love doing laundry! I lived in apartments for years and had to lug heavy laundry bags up & down flights of stairs. Having a laundry room in the house feels like a luxury!

I love to do the laundry too- there is just something about getting all those dirty clothes clean that makes me feel like I accomplished something. I wish I had a lovely room like any one of these to do it in though…the basement laundry room in my building is anything but lovely. Hopefully one day soon :)

would you like to come over and do mine? Maybe if I spruced up our laundry room a bit more then it would make it just a tad better. I think today I will adopt your good attitude and do a few loads, even if I did just had it all done on Sunday.

Hahaha, it’s so true!! I finally just got a washer/dryer in my new place and I love it… if only to fluff up a sweater on your way out the door! Have you heard of Laundress products? You should google them… it’s all luxury laundry soaps and such… even cute laundry bags!

C'est vrai?! I totally understand your love, although I enjoy the after more. I live in NY so laundry is indeed a luxury. The soft, snuggly, refreshing scent of a finished load to me signifies a rebirth! It's like everything is starting over; a clean slate. On our honeymoon in Ireland, I bought an intoxicating lavender linen spray. Each night I spritz a bit onto our bed (and, unfortunately my hubby). Heaven.

Love laundry? You're a sick woman. Imagine how much more you'll love it with the decorating you mentioned. Maybe I should do that too…in my laundry dungeon.

hahahah i HATE laundry!!! (well, truthfully, i hate going into my trashed laundry room- it gives me the heebie jeebies- and i don't like putting clothes away….. SO IF i had one of these PERFECTLY pretty spaces to work in, i think i would go from hate to being excited about having such a pretty room (at first when it was new) to eventual dislike.)

congrats on your 1 yr- so glad we 'met'!!!

nkp: I thought I was sick. Ironing?! You're sicker!

Things That Inspire: Eau de Tide! You're hilarious.

Raina: I just bought a steam washer and dryer for that very reason!!

Daniella: Yes, love Laundress! The packaging is the best!

erin: I just bought a Samsung washer and dryer. Great consumer ratings. Can't wait until they're delivered!

Lydia: I love linen spray and the lavender ones always remind me of Provence.

    Brismod: I know! :)

Living in a Victorian house, there was never an area given over to laundry but, I do have a small area where the washing machine and dryer are located. I think that the U.S. make a point of having a room for these things (I have stayed in houses in America and the laundry facilities are amazing).

I'm sure that you will make yours wonderful and I look forward to seeing what you do with yours. XXXX

I'm with you all the way- there is something so basic and satisfying about taking warm laundry out of a dryer and folding it.

It is killing me that I don't have a laundry room in my new apartment! Ugh, the laundromat!

Here's what I've always wanted though: a stackable set in my master bedroom closet. I dislike trudging through the house with laundry or leaving stacks of it all over (because I'm too lazy). How easy would it be to just… hang it up?

  15. Rebecca

Not silly at all! I find something peaceful about doing laundry too. My laundry room is SO small that I have to walk in one way and back out the same way with my basket. It's too small to turn around in! However, I do have a laundry room, so that is the bright side! I just LOVE that blue laundry room pic that you posted. It's my DREAM laundry room! I loved it so much that I called my husband over to the computer to look at it. He of course thought I was off my rocker! hehe

I love Laundry Rooms…doing the laundry-not so much! We all spend a lot of time in these spaces, so making them pretty & functional is always worth it. I wish more clients would hire me just for these rooms. Love the third picture…appears they have a garden view!

  17. Marsi @ The Cottage

I would love laundry too if I had such a beautiful, fresh space in which to do it. Luckily, I have had a washer & dryer in every home that I've been in for the past 10 years. However, in one home the laundry was in a detached storage building so I had to walk a few steps outside to get to it, and in the home I live in now, it's in the garage. Not that this is horrible, but it can be darn cold sometimes.

Jacqueline: We do like a space for everything, don't we? I guess that's what happens when you have more space than you know what to do with. ;)

    Linda: Most people don't comprende!

Rebecca: That's exactly how the laundry in the temp apt. is! My hubby thinks the same about my design ideas most of the time too. :D

I'm a total laundry dork, too! I'm so picky about my detergents and sorting and I'm one of the only people in New York, I think, who's never sent her laundry out. I dream of one day having my own laundry room. Love the idea of wallpaper, because why not!

  20. Kristin @ Contented

I admit that I like to do laundry, too! there is definitely something about that folded pile of clean, nice smelling clothes to put a smile on my face. I'd kill for an actual laundry room. If I had one, I'd decorate it with some beautiful wallcover. Yes, definitely.

I love laundry to. It is one of those jobs that I feel that I accomplish lots. It is also one of the few jobs around the house that I feel I have lots of options on how environmentally friendly I can make it. I can choose the type of laundry detergent, if I want to wash in hot or cold water. I can even choose to air dry all my laundry on the clothes drying rack and save more electricity for things I really don't want to give up like my computer and internet connection.
