Lighting Overload

hudsonintl

My mom and I went to look at lighting today and came home with nothing.

I need/want to replace:

the wall sconces in the kitchen, hallway, master bathroom, and over the family room fireplace;
the pendant lights in the kitchen;
the chandelier in the master bath and the eat-in area of the kitchen; and
the ceiling lights in the guest rooms, my closet and my studio.

That adds up to a whole lotta lights!!!

As usual, I’m all over the place as to what I want and I’m totally overwhelmed with the choices – except in the case of wall sconces. Why are nice wall sconces so hard to find? These are some I like:

Ideas? Suggestions? In case you missed it, you can see other light fixtures that have caught my eye recently here and here.

    Well, it depends on what style you love, but here are some of my favorites: Aidan Gray Home, Barbara Crosgove, Ikea, Arteriors has a nice mix…I've posted several of their lamps on my blog under DHB DESIGNS, but they have sconces and chandeliers…I may shoot you some of my favorites!!! Goodluck!

    Hi Ally,I've been looking at lights too on my blog, but our budget is limited. Our situation is very tragic. I am seriously thinking of making my own a la the brick house…

    Ally, I know exactly what you mean!

    My ultimate favorite store has moved back to Europe and so I am little sad, but another favorite source for lighting is Scott Landon Antiques. He has a mixture of modern industrial/custom made and beautiful antique chandeliers. He has designers and archiects from all over the world shopping with him. Did I mention he is the most down to earth and outgoing guy? I think you will like his pieces:

    Also, I love the lighting shop in La Conner. (close to Seattle) Though, I don't recall the name…

    Good luck!

    Hi Ally I seem to keep missing you. Well done on finally getting into the house. Lighting is very very challenging. You can find good items but a lot of it looks really cheap, and this doesn't seem to be price related. In other words some inexpensive lighting looks much better than very expensive. As for the chandelier SURELY you will have to replace the murano one which smashed. Get it in red, like mine!! xoxo

    lighting is one of the most important pieces in the house. i like to call it the house jewellery: it must be simple, elegant and of course functional. usally it stands on its own (ceiling or wall) therefore it needs to be the ONE.

    i believe you would love 'brand van egmond'

    It takes months of research for me to but one light fitting let alone the ammount that you have got to get !! I love the two wall sconces that you have said you like. XXXX

    As a professional interior designer, I can tell you that lighting is the HARDEST part of any room.

    Which is not helpful in the least, I realize.

    Just wanted you to feel better about the situation.

    XOXO

    Have you been to Circa Lighting (pretty sure there is one in ATL)? It's great! In particular, Alexa Hampton's collection there has a lot of good wall sconce options. Very Mad Men. Also love Barbara Barry's and Suzanne Kasler's. Alas, none of them are inexpensive. For more reasonable prices, have you tried Shades of Light? They've got a lot of good options, too.

    (And I generally agree that most wall sconces are heinous. Dying to replace the one sconce in my entire house but still haven't found what I'm looking for.)

    Hi Ally – Circa Lighting offers a fantastic sconce selection and I think the styles they stock are all over the map which may help if you haven't narrowed down the style you are going after (or the sheer number might overwhelm). If you can go to one of their stores, all the bette. Their website isn't very flexible. I also really like a couple of the basics Restoration HW carries…I know, so overused but they are very nice and the prices aren't too bad. I know how you feel, we were looking to put in three sets of sconces last year and I was totally overwhelmed by the choices, sconces are the most challenging.

    Thanks for all the great suggestions, everyone! You're so awesome. I'll be checking all of them out for sure.

    Jane: That's what the hubby wants to do. I may too. :)

    Raina: That actually does make me feel a lot better!

    Averill and Amber: I actually did go to Circa and the showroom here was surprisingly quite small. They actually recommended browsing the website!

    My husband and I recently bought a couple wall lamps for our bedroom. We are thrilled with them. They are George Kovacs swing-arm, plug-in wall lamps:

    I'm crazy about this Robert Abbey Anemone light which can be a ceiling or wall lamp:

    Finally, I just recently noticed this cool Cabildo Pendant from Room & Board. It's so hot!

    Oy, I think number two is beyond spectacular. Holy cow, it's beautiful! And you can never go wrong with a Tolomeo in my opinion. We have two in the basement and I actually have one sitting unpackaged on my dining room table ready to hang in the keeping room. Hopefully this weekend, if the mister will play handyman. ;0)

    Locally, I think South of Market has amazing pieces, found industrial objects made into lighting. And another good one to try if you want something unique and vintage/antique is Providence. Good luck!

    Hi Ally! Checking in to see how things are coming along in the new abode:)

    Here are some very nice lighting opitons from http://www.curreyandcompany.com. Pardon me if the link doesn't work, I'm a little new at commenting…but here are the item number of some gorgeous black chandeliers as well as funky crystal ones. Item numbers are 9690, 9691, 9978, 9001, 9000, 9002. Currey is a go to line for me…they're reasonably priced and the styling is beautiful!! Enjoy!
