Every Room Needs a Touch of Red
January 27, 2010 | 39 Comments

Who was it that said every room needs a touch of red?

I’ve always liked red and have lots of red pieces but I can never seem to incorporate it into rooms in a way that I like.

Looking at these photos, I’m starting to think the key is gray walls. That seems to be my answer for everything these days!

Do you have any red in your house?

I bought this darling little red clock last year for my kitchen nook. http://www.tonicdesignstore.com/acatalog/info_LV60053.html
It’s the only thing red in the nook and on a gray Seattle day makes me quite happy.

Thanks for the post about the Alber Elbaz invites! Aren’t they insane? If I had one, I’d frame it! I wish I could go to the ball and wear couture and dance! It’s so fairy princess!
My living room is kind of red. I chose a color called “Lobster Bisque”. I adore it! I love color, I think it adds so much warmth and cheerfulness!

Who said that every room needs a touch of red? Why, Miles Redd, of course!
Great post!

Tons of red here. Unfortunately I tried to suppress my need for it when we moved a few weeks ago. The house feels a teensy bit lifeless without it, actually. Loved the gallery wall post from yesterday. I guess I’m a hybrid – I start out measuring, then get impatient and finish up willy nilly.

wow, i JUST spray-painted a frame for my sister’s bedroom in red, and I too was thinking of painting her walls gray. I love that Abigail Ahern look, especially for girls’ rooms.

agree! they give a little bit of something to any room, no matter how dull it is!

I don’t have any red in our home, but this makes me think other wise. I have to agree the gray walls sure do help.

I used to have a red dining room accent wall, but it is now a pale aqua. I do love red as an accent color though!

Those red/grey combos are killer. I love a touch of red..maybe with those sleek new grey cabs in your kitchen you can throw in that dash of red somewhere?

not the popular vote here, but red is a color I avoid in my home. Orange, pink, yellow, green, yes. Anything but red- just a weird visceral reaction to it. I do love it for other people though…

I have a fine collection of red silk cushions, and, looking at your images here, I now realize that they would be displayed to best advantage against a matt slate-grey sofa. This is potentially quite an expensive realisation, she said accusingly…

In this casa Red is a continuing thread…in pieces and pops. Red metal vent hood. Red toaster. Red laundry door. Red library wall peeking out behind bookcases….and I brought home a gem of a credenza the other day and thinking of…wait for it. Red.

Yes, I agree every home should have a little red. I have a dark claret red in the formal lounge room and a brighter happier red in the family room. I wear a fair bit of red too so it is just an extension. I have had one client who loves red…..and circles. So in every room there is red or circles or both like her rug.

I don’t have any red in my house apart from a Union Jack cushion in one of the bedrooms. I was in Oka today and they had red everywhere. … and doesn’t the red look great with the grey ? XXXX

Oh yes, every single room has something red, it is my favourite colour, from artwork, to pillows to vignettes, it all gets the red touch around the house. It just makes me smile everytime I walk into a room and see a pop of red. I do the same with what I wear, always a pop of red, everyday.

I love red and have it my living room — in the rug, some art and a throw pillow. Then, because the dining room is open the living room, I have a couple small touches of red in there.
Eventually this rug will wear out and then I’ll probably switch to another color scheme. But for now, I think it’s great!

The grey walls are definitely the answer! I love colour, so have touches of it everywhere – probably more pink than red, but that’s OK too I think!

I can never get enough red, especially a lacquered piece. The Baroque mirror reminds me of a frame I first saw at Renegade Craft Fair in Brooklyn this summer. The designer was recently featured in Apartment Therapy, which I thought you might like to see. Here’s the link:

Have you heard of John Murphy before. I don’t have a frame of his, but it’s something I’m seriously thinking about getting.

I find red a hard color to use, perhaps you’ve found the answer! A red with more orange in it seems to be easier to work with, have a few dishes in that color. I’ll keep the idea of mixing it with grey in mind, in the images this mix just works!

No red in my abode and I miss it at times. Fortunately it’s a popular choice in Michigan as well as Nashville so I get to use it in my designs for others. I favor orange red or that deep blue/red.
It’ll look fabulous with many of the pre-selections that you’ve presented to us for you new home.
Enjoy London!!

Sottocenere: That clock is so cute!
pam: Too funny! You’ll have to show us if you do it!
sarah: Yes, so very fairly princess. Sigh.
Chedva: What a coincidence!
jennifer: I’ve always loved high gloss red doors.
Modfrugal: Great idea!
kate: I think a lot of people feel the way you do. I find it an intimating color and I think that’s part of the reason I have a problem making it work.
mise: That’s what I’m here for!
linda: I can’t wait to see that!
Jane F: I loved that post. The red really makes those spaces.
Lydia: I currently have more mirrors than walls to put them on so I have to resist. His artwork is really cute though.
maya: You know how I feel about orange!

Several years ago red was my go to color, these days I seem to gravitate towards grey, cool blue and punches of yellow or pink. But, boy… does that red pull at my heart strings!

For years, my signature color was red. My kitchen was red, even the grout between the backsplash tiles was red. But now, my punch of color is orange or pink, but I do still love me some red.

Alessandra Branca also said that every room needs a touch of red (and black). I have red walls in my kitchen – love them! It’s so warm and inviting, really the heart of the home.

Beautiful images, Ally! Red is bold and gorgeous, especially paired with rich grays, like this. I don’t have red in my space, but grew up with a mother who adores red!
Have a great weekend
