New Home, New Magazines

atlhomes

So, we’re deep in the throes of getting ready to sell our house and move across the country. With all that that entails, you’d think I’d have enough on my mind but you know what I’m thinking about? Magazines. (Priorities, shmiorities.)

I picked up Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and Southern Living while I was in Atlanta last week and really enjoyed both. I mean check out some of this deliciousness from Atlanta Homes:

Being a magazine addict, I love any excuse to subscribe to something new and I think a move to a new city qualifies as a good excuse. So, tell me, do any of you subscribe to these? Would you recommend them?

And what are the rest of you reading these days? By now you’ve all probably heard that Metropolitan Home is also shutting down. Even if I wasn’t its biggest fan, I still think it’s so sad that all these shelter magazines are biting the dust, one after another. Am I the only one who’s still not over Domino?

Being from the U.K. I don't get these magazines but I do buy zillions of English ones and I also have Victoria sent to me. I think that was stopped for a while so, you never know. Domino might come back. …. although, when Victoria came back it wasn't quite the same.

I'm so excited for you.Enjoy reading and planning, Alek. XXXX

    I don't need magazines anymore – I have you! (:

Yes, it is sad when good (and so many of them) magazines vanish. But new ones will come along.

    Great images, Ally!

I LOVE the sitting room with all the books. How is that for a great conversation area? And those leather chairs in the first image. Fantastico!

    Happy, happy! OX Monika

I agree with Monika. Why buy magazines when you can read blogs!!! Seriously, moving is SOO stressful and foul that any excuse to inject some frivolousness into the exercise along the lines of new magazines is entirely utterly justified. I love that bedroom with the wooden walls. Tell me, what happens to the cabin plan now? Where do Atlantans go to play? xoxo

Hi! You're sooo lucky! With the moving and everything, I mean…I'd give half my (poor) savings to be able to change homes, towns, scenary for a while… Anyhow, I live in Greece so these magazines don't really come that far, but…a couple of years I discovered a spanish deco magazine called "El mueble" that I.absolutely.adore. so I buy it every month in double the original price no less!

I built my home based on its pictures and I'm so glad I did!

I also enjoy the british Home&Gardens and everytime I visit a european country my souvenirs always are tons and tons of deco magazines that I end up carrying around airports!

I just go to the bookstore and read Livingetc… Sometimes I pick up Country Living…. And I also get some of the Better Homes and Gardens Publications – but I don’t really subscribe to any magazines anymore. I used to subscribe to Domino, Cottage Living, and country Home, but they’ve all sadly folded…

    Hope the move goes smoothly.

Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles is really one of the best around. It and Canadian House & Home kinda sorta attempt to replace Domino. Don't care much for Southern Living. I was born and raised in the deep south and have lived in Atlanta since I was a toddler. And Southern Living is just too quaint-southern for my tastes. So sad about Met Home. It will leave a huge void. I think we're all going to need to look to the internet to provide our decor eye candy.

Can't wait until you make the move!

No, you're not the only one :[ Domino filled such a unique niche in the design world. Those interiors were so real and accessible, yet designed so well. I think it gave the average DIY designer higher aspirations and hope to see them to fruition. Other mags show rooms like that now and then, too, but not cover to cover, every month. Sigh.

You've seen Lonny, I'm sure. It'll be interesting to see what that evolves into.

Still reading House Beautiful, Martha Stewart's Living (I know, but I still love that woman), and sitting in Barnes & Noble peeking at designer's books I can't afford to bring home with me. Suzanne Kasler's new book, Inspired Interiors, is fantastic!!!

Just a thought after reading other comments – you know where all of the blog photos come from of course? Yup, magazines. If there aren't any magazine photo shoots where will the blogs access all these fabulous homes?

My husband and I have lived all over the place. We have lived in all the major cities except Atlanta. I love visiting that town, there are so many great neighborhoods…and the people are very friendly. You are going to love it. It is a design mecca. I am so envious of your adventure.

I used to subscribe to Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles and might have to resubscribe now that virtually every one of my dozen+ subscriptions is no longer…boo hoo. Atlanta has (had?) another publication along the same lines that wasn't bad- Atlanta Home, but I think this is a quarterly publication. As for Southern Living, the revamp wasn't what I expected and it's coverage of interiors is minimal. I think it is more about the recipes and regional travel.

Maybe we should all get together and release our own publication to fill the void? Anybody have a sponsor with a fat wallet? ;0)

hi, just found your blog on Decorno. Looks like you have found some nice houses in Atlanta. I live in south metro Atl, so welcome to the area! I think you will like it here. I do love Atl Homes & Lifestyles mag too. It will be good to have another Atl based blogger to follow!

  12. Ally

Dagny: I do like both of those very much. I just wish international mags didn't cost so much here!

Jane: I believe there are islands off of the GA coast. I will be investigating. ;)

Jacci: Such a good point. Where will we go for our beautiful images??

Raina: I forgot all about Veranda – I need to look into it. Thanks!

nkp: Would that not be a dream come true? Maybe Big Papa can fund our venture? He's local, right? ;)

Sarah: Thank you and welcome to my blog!

    Caitlin: Still negotiating!! Aaargh!

  13. Aspirations of a Sou

Good luck in negotiations! (I've been a late poster too much lately!).

I get Southern LIving still- it is what it is, but without my Southern Accents, I need something! Also, pick up the occasional Atlanta Life and Homes but haven't subscribed… though I think I will! Check out Jezebel too- not too much on the home side but fun looks at happening around the ATL.

Wow – another blogger moving to Atlanta – great news! Atlanta is a house obsessed, design obsessed town, so I think you will like it!

I love Atlanta Homes and Lifestyles – it is one of my favorites. It always has great features about homes and designers around the Southeast, and it also has great information about what is going on around town.

    Good luck with your move!

So, I'm a little late to the party here. I read your post the other day and realized I had missed something. Your moving???? So sad your leaving us here in Seattle, but happy for your new adventure. The homes you are considering look amazing. I've had a few adventures in that neck of the woods and remember gawking at the amazing homes and architecture. Good luck Ally. I'll be excited to see which home ends up being yours!

    xoxo,

I'm not over domino but I must confess that I sold my issues on ebay for $450.

I live in California but I just subscribed to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles. I've only received a few issues to date but I'm really enjoying them.

I think you're going to love Atlanta, it's looks like a great city. I hope to visit one day.

BTW-I gave you an award on my blog:)

I live in Atlanta and subscriber to AH&L. It's great. Make sure you join the Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. for the Tour of Kitchens in March. AH&L sponsor the event and it's a great way to learn the neighborhoods of Atlanta while seeing fabulous homes.
