Today’s Crush: Suzani Tray

So I think the entire design blogging world is slowly coming down off of our collective Lonny high. I thought it was a pretty fantastic issue. I just wish it could be in print so I could touch it and feel it and have my way with it. Since everyone’s been talking about it, I’d just like to add that of the many things that stood out for me, my favorite may have been this:

Picture 112

A suzani tray that Grace Bonney cleverly uses under her dish rack. It’s just brilliant, right?

I can never have enough trays. There’s nothing more versatile than a tray and no easier way to tidy up a space. The upside of Lonny being online is that the photos link directly to the source. So when I clicked on the photo, it took me to this:

at Decorative Things. I don’t use a dish rack so I’d use mine as a serving tray or maybe in the entry for mail. What do you think? Or are you over suzanis?

Before I leave you for the weekend, I’d like to send you over to Simply Seductive where I am participating in Linda’s Favorite Color Combination series today. Have a great weekend, all!

Hey Alek, I'm with you I want Lonny in print. I know we are moving in a virtual world and it is nice to be able to click away and get all the info but there's nothing like a tactile object that you can paw over and pick up again and again and again. I was intrigued with the magazine and enjoyed the content but would much rather it in print than on my screen. Have a fabulous weekend. Jennifer

I love Suzanis – they're the sort of pattern that seems to fit in anywhere. As for Lonny, I think it's fabulous and I love the online format. Since having a baby I find paper magazines more of a challenge because she eats paper. I can read Lonny to my heart's content as I feed here and there's nothing for to reach back and grab!

That tray really stood out to me, too (and I also clicked on the link and even saved it to my Wists!). That said, suzani IS maybe a bit overplayed but I think that, like zig zags or Imperial Trellis, it's a classic and a little of it in a room or house is always welcome.

    Hi Alek

Love your suzani trays. Would love to own a suzani throw also in the future.

Well I am always last to arrive and as such have not seen the Lonny magazine as yet so I'm taking your link and advice and popping over there.

    Have a great weekend. Julie

I am so copying this idea in my own kitchen right now! Who cares if its Friday night-guests are coming over before we go out and my countertops just cannot wait. Perfect makeover for a necessary eye sore. Am still so happy for your new job at Apartment Therapy-I think you should celebrate by buying yourself a ghost chair. Please convince AT to create an Atlanta edition! Happy Friday!

As far as the virtual vs. print issue – I understand that change is inevitable, and I understand that Lonny exists in its current form for financial reasons… but it’s just not the same as holding a magazine in your hands. It completely changes the experience… I congratulate the editors and I think they’re working within this uncertain and yet-undefined space that the publishing world occupies… but I’d much rather read a print magazine than one online… Maybe since so many of us are voicing this, Lonny will go to print at some point. That would be great.

Anyway. Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Alek!

Raina and Averill: I'm with you two. It is a classic in my book.

highglossblue: Thanks! I'll see what I can do. ;) A ghost chair to celebrate? I like the way you think!

Devon: I hadn't even thought of that option. :)

I just found your fabulous blog via Fifi and The Antiques Diva on Twitter. Love your site and will definintely be back.

I use a dish drainer and I love the idea of using a beautiful tray underneath… makes for a lot less washing of dish towels.

Hey, Alek! WOW – congrats on the AP gig :) Great fun.

I think the tray is festive. Sure, suzanis will probably be deemed as completely dated within 2 years, but so what! :) Just don't tell your guests. Then, when the design world declares that it's "out" all you have to do is be careful to never post a picture of it on your blog, and we'll all still have the highest design respect for you and you can have the best of both worlds enjoying our respect and your secret suzani tray :)

Congrats again on AP – looking forward to reading more often.

    Go´morn Ally,

It's been awhile peeping in your site. It's sad coz I really had head-over-heels at work. Hope after this storm, it calm down, so I have time to visit all the bloggie friends I follow.

Oppss… this post gives me a nostalgic feelings. When I was young, our dish tray looks like this. Sometimes, blogging makes me have full of life. Thanks for sharing, dear Ally.

Have a wonderful day and blessed Sunday.

    xoxo

i do the same thing with my dish rack! it makes for such a prettier way of drying your dishes! i really like the idea of using it in your entry way. and definitely not over this suzani for sure!

um, is it okay if i start my own belated lonny high? i haven't been great at reading blogs lately so i've missed it up till now. thank you for mentioning it, i love it!!

incidentally, i recycled a post from my old blog (the deco detective) yesterday, and there's a tray under the dish rack in one of the photos. it's a great idea, it looks nice and stops the water from floating all over the place.
