Pretty Lights

So I’m looking around for a light fixture to replace my Murano. (I swear I’m over it, not that you’d know it by the way I’ve been going on about it.) However, it did occur to me that I never showed you the what it looked like after it fell:

Imagine a thousand more glass pieces and that was pretty much what it looked like.

So anyway, here are some lights that have caught my eye as of late:

I asked about these before and one of my savvy readers tipped me off to to the source:

And finally this one:

from this show:

Off the topic but have you all seen this show? It is so clever and hysterically funny that I dare say it may be the best sit com since Arrested Development.

Anyway, on this week’s episode, this light fixture just jumped out at me. Isn’t it just bodacious? This is the kitchen of Ed O’Neill (Al Bundy) and Sofia Vergara (from the short-lived and also hysterical Knights of Prosperity) and their entire house is kind of fabulous. (I swear ABC isn’t paying me.) Okay, so if anyone recognizes the light fixture, please let me know.

Even further off the topic: I’m also loving Glee.

Have a great weekend, everyone. See you Monday when I’ll be having my first giveaway!

A giveaway, you say! I hear you and I'm meditating in preparation. We don't get American TV here so I'll have to focus on practicalities and say that I really like that second chandelier, the unusually shaped one in blue, which looks like a family heirloom (as your Murano did) rather than a generational gimmick.

Yes lights are very very challenging. Can easily look too trendy but you don't want Granny style light either. I agree with Mise, Second one is best. What about modern swedish disco ball style (sorry that didn't come out right). I will have to explain better another time. xoxo

These are all really unique, original choices. I think that second blue one is particularly striking. Is it beaded?

You must have been completely shocked when you walked in to that disaster. I'm sad about your chandalier, but so very glad that no one in your family was hurt!

And Glee, yeah, I'm completely hooked! Soooo good!

Holy crap, that really did fall down… I wonder what happened… I'm sure you'll find another gorgeous one though! I love the black one.

I don't know how you got all that glass up without stepping on a missed piece! that looks like such a disaster. I want to incorporate a chandelier shape in my apartment, but I can't install one (as we're in a rental.) I also have a couple boxes of globe string lights I love and have no outdoor space to hang them up in. My current imagination is dreaming of stringing globe lights around a cheap chandelier so the light is coming from the string lights. but maybe that would awful!

Oh what a shame that your murano glass chandelier broke into pieces. I think I would be sick about it too. I really love that black scrolling chandelier though.

What?! I must have found your blog after this occured…what a shame!!! I won't even bother to offer my opinion on what you should replace it with, you have outstanding taste and whatever you select will be wonderful.

I love the orange one! I think it's a good move to go for something completely different so that you don't always compare it to the Murano… which would be heartbreaking. So sorry this happened to you. I had a smallscale Murano heartbreak of my own when I emigrated. A small ornament that belonged to my grandparents was the only thing in my entire move that broke. I cried and cried…

I'd still be going on about it, too! What a tough loss (and scary! y'all were so lucky to be no where near it when it fell)….

These are some great options and I do love that one from the set of Modern Family, too (which I haven't seen yet but keep meaning to DVR).

It actually makes my chest hurt to see your shattered Murano fixture. I think you're taking it much better than I would have! These fixtures are all so cool. I haven't caught this show yet, but from the previews it looks hysterical (and with a comparison to Arrested Development, it's a must-see for me!)

P.S. Can't wait for your giveaway next week. Christina is hosting a giveaway from my Etsy shop today:

  12. ALEK

Jane: I like the sound of a modern Swedish disco ball! Do tell me more.

nkp: I believe it is beaded. By very skilled hands!

elaine: I missed it. Now it's some other annoying ad. I may have to do away with them as they're clearly distracting from my very important posts. ;)

Raina: WHAAAAAAT? What a small world! Thanks for pointing me to his blog.

    LeAnn: Thank you and welcome!

jen: I have faith in you – you can make that work, I'm sure!

susie and Angela: Thank you! I knew my very knowledgeable readers would know!

LindsB: Coal diggers. I know. It killed me. :D

Kristin: Sorry about your lamp. Why do these things always happen to the special pieces?

Jane: That was my thinking too – a fresh new look! I'm so sorry about your ornament. I would have cried too. :(

  13. K-Line

What I love about these choices is how different they all are from one another – and from the Murano. I think it's great to branch out. They are some lovely choices. I think my faves are the first and the last. But I do love that orange one too…

That was so rotten about your Murano chandelier….still, it was just a chandelier and not the end of the world, I guess. Anyway, my favourite is the 2nd one too. The one in the library. I like that one 'cos I don't think it will date….but I'm sure you will choose a lovely one.Have a great weekend Alek. XXXX

you're making me want to cry with that breakage!! do you ever visit deluxe junk in fremont? they have a few gorgeous chandeliers… one is murano – but i'm sure nowhere near as gorgeous as yours was! they also have a great lucite one i'm thinking of snagging for my dining room….

  16. suzie

    Hi,

a friend sent me over and so I am here for the first time and I am impressed by the first pic (the broken Venezian chandelier) – what a pitty ! It happened to my mother-in-law who lives in Venezia as well. She managed to rescue pieces and that a crafter formed into a pair of wall lamps. Do you think you could do the same ?

    All the best

hi alek, thanks for following – you're number 100! it's so nice that it was someone i know who helped me reach the magic number =)

the chandelier does look a bit sad. good that it didn't land on somebody's head though. but i'm sure you'll find a great replacement!

    happy weekend alek!

Keep your spirits up Alek, I know the perfect light is lurking out there & you'll find it very soon. We haven't seen Modern Family out here yet, hope it comes soon, as I do love anything vaguely politically incorrect & this looks perfect!

I love that first black chandelier that you posted the best. Very dramatic and wonderful. I haven't watched Modern Family, but I've heard it's funny. I do love Glee though! There are some talented actors on that show, aren't there?

  20. Splendid Willow

You are too funny!!! (: Not too sad are you!

I thought you were going with the fantastic white wired one from the Conran shop? No?

But these are also amazing. You have such great taste! Happy week! OX Monika

  21. vintage simple

Geeez..! I'm really sorry about the chandelier, and I'm really glad it didn;t land on anybody's head…

I like the idea of the orange – sort of speaking back to that cool orange chair you have downstairs… Have you thought about just getting a vintage crystal chandelier and painting the metal part a color of your choice? The reason I say that is because it might be a reasonable price… I bought a little one (on ebay) for our breakfast nook in the kitchen and painted it blue – a couple of shades darker than the ceiling… I really love the way it looks.

Glee – yes, I'm hooked. And I've only caught part of one of the episodes of Modern Family – funny stuff.

Ah, I think I shed a tear seeing that photo of your broken chandelier. Sad sad sad. I love the second one, but then I looked again and I wasnt' sure if I loved it by itself or if I just loved that room full of books?! I'm downloading Modern Fam, thanks for the tip, Mad Men is coming to an end soon and I need a new show! (We dont have a tv, so I keep my show watching online to a minimum! :) )

Our tv service just kicked back in a couple of weeks ago and this was the first show I caught (I think it was the 3rd episode). I was sitting on the sofa laughing out loud. Then laughed more when I re-watched it with the hubby. So flipping funny! I snorted last night. Ha!
