Ikea Trollsta

sh

I have been loving the Ikea Trollsta sideboard since it came out. I’ve resisted it because a) I don’t have any room for it and b) I generally avoid things that scream “I’m from Ikea.” But  I just can’t get it out of my mind – especially in yellow!  Look how great it looks in these spaces!

And this one even has a mini Twiggy lamp on it which I love so much. So it’s basically torture looking at this photo:

So I need you all to talk me out of it. Please tell me all the reasons I shouldn’t get this. Thank you, I know I can count on you!

6 yellow in stock and 10 black! (I'd do black for sure).

But~ for 350$ I bet you'd be Much happier it you found an interesting

vintage credenza, changed the legs, and had it powder coated exactly the hue you want!

Remember: its end of season yard sale time…

You, my friend, are my new Bad Influence.

OK, so I'm taking this one at face value. Don't do it. And here's why.

    1) Chances are, being from IKEA, it's made from some sort of MDF or pressed wood rather than real planks of wood.

    2) I'm usually all for yellow, but this one has a tinge of green in it that I don't go for.

    3) I think it would be ok against a white backdrop in a minimalist space, but it would constrain the rest of the room considerably.

    4) The curves at the base aren't really graceful – they look a bit like an amateurly designed decal.

But don't pay too much attention to me, Ikea always rings my NO bell so I'm not a neutral commentator.

I have to say, that is one of the coolest Ikea pieces I've seen! Like others have suggested, I would probably just find a vintage piece and paint it. It will be tough to find lines like the Ikea piece though. I've been craving a primary yellow piece for my home, but I think I'll do something smaller, and that I could paint if I tire of it.

I'm not sure this is helpful considering you're trying to avoid IKEA, but in person the trollsta didn't strike me as particularly well made. What DID though is the Edland series — which in the store also comes in a nice gray. It even has a fun pattern inside the drawers (I'm a sucker for that).

I've been searching craigslist for a sideboard as well as yard sales. It is just the start of yardsale season here, wish me luck…

I'd say hold off, find a great piece that you can do what you wish to. In the end it will end up more stylish than this one from ikea and more of your own.

I dig it too. But what I'm worried about is the laquer scratch…not sure of a good way to hide that once it happens. You know it will happen.

I loved it when I first saw it too. I think the fact that it's from IKEA shouldn't be a deciding factor. Gotta agree with Raina on that one. That said, I saw it in person and was less impressed than when viewing it in print. It does photograph well. Why don't you go for a visit?

That yellow really is spectacular! But I have the same feelings on the IKEA stuff. Acutally, my second-to last gross IKEA piece is leaving this afternoon. :) But I just saw a great new shelf/clock thing in the new House Beautiful that I can't stop thinking about. Guess where it's from? I'll never escape.

well, i'm usually not one to talk people out of things, especially cute affordable things like this, however, i agree that for $350 you might be able to find a more solid, lasting piece at a yard sale or vintage shop and fix it up yourself (if you have the time and want to put the effort in). if not though, i say get it.

    Sorry, doll —

No way I can talk you out of it, b/c now I'm dying for one too! It is very hard for me to pass anything bright yellow and not want to take it home!

And, btw, it SO doesn't look IKEA-y!

It is lovely!! I am eyeing it myself. And there are 2 great Swedish women behind the design. (For being Ikea it is actually pretty well built). Hey, and its cheaper then the fall boots I am looking at. Scary but true!

I love this piece. I saw it at a press event last year and bought it instantly. It is one of my favourite pieces in my home and I too have a Foscarini light sitting on it. I'm so tired of people giving Ikea such a hard time. They have been amazing at what they do and they make design affordable. FYI my boyfriend dealt with the flatpack so I don't feel the pain like others might feel after assembling it.
