Arrivederci, Dear Murano

We had a little mishap in the Right Bank household this weekend that I just have to share with you. We came home Sunday afternoon after a fun day out with our guests and found my beloved antique Murano chandelier on the floor shattered into a million pieces. We’re still trying to figure out how it happened.

Here it is hanging in our Paris apartment. It’s hard to see the details from this picture but it was stunning. We brought it over with us when we moved and I had it installed in the upstairs hallway. (Thank goodness the dogs were downstairs!) So it survived a move across the Atlantic but ultimately met its demise here in America. I’m not terribly upset, just a little sad because it was an antique so it’s not something that can be easily replaced and because it reminds me of our Paris years. But it is just an object after all and as I said, I’m thankful no one was hurt.

Have you ever lost something valuable or with great sentimental value?

I promise to be back tomorrow with something a little more uplifting(!)

Oh that is such a shame, it is so beautiful and like you said reminds you of Paris. But no one was hurt thank goodness!

Oh Dear Alek I would be upset.. besides it's beauty it represents many treasured memories for you. Well my latest material 'loss' is I cannot find my stash of travel photos… the bulk of them are missing and as they were not digital I just have to keep looking. x Julie

You just broker my heart a little. What a sad thing to come home to. I'm so sorry!

My grandmother had quite the champagne taste when it came to furniture. Lots of very eccentric items that were purchased from some big name designers.

When she passed my dad, not understanding that a leopard upholstered horned legged chair might actually be quite valuable, sold everything for a pittance in a yard sale. Why wouldn't he? They didn't fit in with the 1970's colonial decor he had in his suburban home.

Now I look at the photos of her things and I get a pang in my heart knowing what treasures they were.

Plus, I'd LOVE a leopard chair!

oh how horrible. i understand your itallic meaning of not "terribly" upset. it's sort of like what are you going to do right? but still in the back of your mind you're like, bummer. just a big fat bummer. well, if there are any bits and pieces from the chandelier that made it to the floor whole, in one piece, save them and perhaps add them to it's replacement. dangle them from a newer chandelier to still have the remnents. little memories, like the ones from paris. just a thought…

Oh so sad… it was a beauty!

My mother had my grandmother's gorgeous cut velvet antique sofa in her house and had promised it to me. When she moved to Hawaii, she sold everything out of her house to lighten the load. Including my sofa.

Gotta say your attitude is EXCELLENT. I'd be much more hostile and miserable about it all, even if it is simply an object. Very sorry something so beautiful is gone. But I know it makes space for some new beauty in your home!

    BOO!

I am so sad for you. I feel your pain too – When I was a girl my mom had a lovely golden color lamp. It was in the foyer of the house. Every year on my birthday I had my photo taken next to the lamp near the front door. As an adult, I was given the lamp and it sat next to my front door.

One day while cleaning, the cushion from my sofa bumped the lamp off the table and it smashed into a million pieces on the floor. It was heartbreaking.

This may seem crazy, but I collected every photo I could find of my special lamp as well as the finial and a few of the shards and placed it in a box up in the cabinet. Now when I come across the box it is a reminder of my dear lamp.

You are indeed lucky that no one was hurt. You're lucky you had a photo of it, and hanging in your Paris apartment no less.

Oh my gosh, that is so sad- I am upset for you! That is so strange, I cant believe it just fell from the sky and came crashing down like that. Thank goodness no one was home to get hurt.

I agree with the, you're so mature, comment..I would have gone ballaistic! It's gorgeous, and that story breaks my heart! In our move from NZ to TX the only thing I have yet to find is an antique silver cocktail tray that I have on my vanity holding perfume and jewelry..it was a gift, and now it's missing in action! It's killing me..and all my boxes are unpacked…scary right?!

I totally can understand your feelings. Imagine you would have been eating at that table (tomatoe soup…) no, what a shock. Good that no one is hurt.

And it looks so fabulous in your appartment in Paris (now I understand the name of your blog!!!). – Must have been a great time !! (I LOVE Paris).

Is it comforting a bit, when I tell you, that you can find many many of those in Venice, in almost every lamp shop ? Maybe you can plan a romantic trip one day ….

I was just searching for some broken parts for our murano chandelier and I came upon your blog. How upsetting!

Did you ever figure out why or how it could of just fallen?

Did you ever find a replacement fixture?
