Wanted: A Library

dti9

I have always wanted a library. It’s one of those things I thought I’d have in my grown up house. I don’t have an entire room to turn into a library but maybe it’s time to carve out a space for one somewhere.

I’ve seen a lot of dining rooms doubling as libraries and I really like that idea. But even just a corner with a big comfy chair would be nice.

Or maybe in my studio?

Do any of you have a library? If you do, does it have another function or are you lucky to have a dedicated room? If not, where do you keep all your books?

These are blow-my-mind aaahmazing! I'm completely smitten. In fact, the first one was a contender for my post today as well. And the one with the Eames lounge chair and crazy gorgeous lamp is a finalist for my "style in one picture" choice.

This is a topic so close to my heart. We have books everywhere! Literally littered about in every room of our home! Some reside on bookshelves, others in built in bookcases, and many lovingly stacked awaiting an eager hand to flip open a page. We even had a bookcase built in to the area that would have been an "breakfast bar" with stools in the kitchen and now it houses our kiddos' book collection.

I love all of your ideas, but I have always dreamt of having a dining room with three walls of books and a window seat or perhaps even a fireplace. Can you imagine!

Currently, and sadly, the books are keeping us.

We have a library(with three floor to ceiling bookshelves, not built in) in what was once the dining room and now is an office of sorts…and we call it "the dining…no…offi.. no,whatever that room with the linen loveseat is" room.

    Sad. Very sad.

I am however, stealing many of your pics for my insp folder because…by gum…we are putting in built in's. So help me…in the whatever room.

No true library yet, but 2 "stacked" (as in, full) built-in bookshelves and a full bookshelf in my study. One of my dream rooms when we finally finish our basement is making one of the dark rooms in the back into a dark, cozy library with great big leather chairs perfect for reading in.

I want a library just so I can have a cool library ladder!

We lined one wall of our home office with tall bookshelves. We don't ever really work in the home office (with laptops we tend to just work in the living room), so maybe I should start calling that room the library. It just sounds so much better! (Library = gives the impression of a relaxing and cozy space; office = work work work.)

I have long had images 1 & 4 inspiring me to one day build a library! Just the thought of curling up in a comfy sofa with a cup of tea – bliss! We’re actually planning a library in the new house we’re moving to – in our case it will be sharing the space together with our home office.

nkp: Sorry if I stole your picture. And I did steal it from you, as you know. :)

Plush Palate: Maybe I'll just start saying "What she said," and point to your blog. :)

    Linda: I'm rootin'for you!

Aspirations: Ooooooo, a dark cozy library sounds great too. I envision wood walls and thick blankets on those leather chairs.

anh-minh: I confess a ladder is one of the reasons I want a library too!

i hear your dilemma. i too thought by now i'd have carved some sort of space, however small for books, but no. we rent a tiny cottage on cape cod, which has it's good points but space is not one of them. i have many books currently in boxes waiting for their day to shine. i love how industrial your top photo is, with those metal shelves. really great. oh…one day we'll get there :)

You did not steal it from me. There is no theft among friends. :0) It wasn't "mine" to begin with, but thanks for bringing that beauty out of the dark corners of my blog. It is a great room, isn't it?! (and thanks for the link love) Amazing post, Alek!

Oh. My. I really really really long to have a library. We will be moving into another house whenever this one sells and I'm already planning built-ins in both the living room and the dining room for all our books. Wish we had a dedicated reading room though… With a ladder and a window seat and comfy chairs and superb lighting. With a big round table in the center with opened books all over it to inspire whomever who walks in…

I love the idea of having a library in your home. It was always on my list for a must have in a home, but sadly I don’t have one yet. Hopefully I’ll get my hands on spare room in our next house and be able to have a library.

I do like the idea of dining area/library, but right now our dining space isn’t too large so that’s not happening.

I love the idea of a small library, but then I wouldn’t have enough books to actually fill the shelves…, since I only keep the really (really) important ones and get rid of the others (so I don’t have to move them…).

I like the idea of a library but sadly I don’t have the room for it! I have one of those spine bookcase things from West Elm and all the rest go in a plastic bin – sad really…

Hey Alek! Thanks for your nice comment on my post. I agree, I feel like we’ve become “fast friends” … and we haven’t even met each other!! I guess, great minds think alike ;) As for the library…again, you touched on one of my absolute loves…BOOKS! I’ve always thought them to be beautiful objects. You can never have too many and they always look gorgeous as décor!

  14. Sanity Fair

I’m currently working on this problem – I have hundreds of books! My bedroom has served as my library, but that’s not recommended (unhealthy with all that dust). My plan is to turn a wall of my living room into bookcases.

Ah I just wrote a long comment but the intarwebz ate it.

Well the gist of it was: Go different! A vacation home is to get away from day to day life :] Try your hand at a decor style that you're not used to, and can grow to love in a while different way!
