Introducing Traveling Thursdays And Hotel Missoni!
July 23, 2009 | 44 comments

I’m so, so excited to tell you that I’m starting a weekly feature today called Traveling Thursdays!

MY TRAVELING CREDS
I don’t know if I can adequately express just how much I love to travel. I live for it. To give you an idea, here’s a list of the countries I’ve visited so far. Travel is what fuels and inspires me and very much an essential part of my life. And I’m talking about all kinds of travel, including the kind where you need visas and immunizations. (Often, those are the most memorable trips!)
I’m also a big planner and the amount of research I do is actually kind of ridiculous. I venture to say I could give most travel consultants a run for their money(!) Most of my research pertains to special places to stay because a good, well-designed hotel is pretty much my idea of heaven. So I’m sitting on hundreds of bookmarks, magazine clippings, dog eared books, etc. and I thought why not share them? I think they can give you some great design inspiration and maybe even a few ideas for your next vacation.

WHAT AND WHERE IN THE WORLD?
I’ve been posting about hotels every now and then but I really wanted to make it a regular thing. Traveling Thursdays will be part travel planner and part travelogue and it’ll cover a whole range of styles and locations because I truly love them all!

I think this feature will be unique because these are my personal research files. There are lots of sites that show you fantasy locales but I’m more interested in doing than daydreaming so I’ll be talking about places I am considering actually staying in one day. Occasionally, I’ll also show you some favorite places I’ve stayed in in the past and other fun travel-related items.
Another reason I think this feature will be different is because I have a penchant for far flung spots. I’ve literally been to Timbuktu and back (and quite proud of this fact being the travel geek that I am). So even though I’ll cover places beloved by everyone like France and Italy, I’m also planning a lot of trips to places that make people say, “Where?” or very often, “Why?” and I don’t see a lot of that online, especially from a design perspective.

So that’s the story behind Traveling Thursdays. Let’s move on to the main event, shall we?
HOTEL MISSONI
All of the photos here are from the Hotel Missoni in Edinburgh, Scotland. I talked before about how much I want to go to Scotland. I’ve been to England, Ireland and even Wales, but not Scotland. How does that even happen?! I don’t know but now there’s one more reason I need to go.
There you can sleep on beds with Missoni linens . . .

eat off of Missoni dishes . . .

lounge around in Missoni robes . . .

and hang out in your Missoni dress and fabulously coordinate with your room:

Okay, I don’t think dresses are included so you’d better pack your own.
The colors, the patterns . . . I say “viva Missoni!” What say you?
I really hope you enjoyed the debut of Traveling Thursdays! As always, I love hearing your thoughts so do let me know. Bon voyage!

You and I could be VERY best friends! I just know it! I am jumping up and down about the Traveling Thursdays! You know how much we love to travel, and I also do the same thing – plan for months on end before we depart – because you are so right, the perfect place to stay is such an essential element of the trip! And Scotland is divine! We attended a very good friend’s wedding two years ago, and we all stayed in an amazing castle. The girl married a musician with the Old Blind Dogs, and the reception was over-the-top Scottish style! A trip I will never forget!
Enjoy the day!

I think it’s a great idea – like you said you see a lot of blogs about speculative travel, but to hear something from a real perspective will be really helpful.
Also I’d never tell you but I’m super jealous of your list of countries visited. Ugh!

I wouldn’t have guessed that Scotland would be the site of the Missoni hotel, but now you have no excuse but to go and check it out! Such gorgeous colours!

Yeah! me & 17 yr old daughter would love to chill out in all Missoni’s things.
It’s funny too, that I myself never been to Scotland like you and been to all countries nearby.
Hope you find the right time to fly over Scotland and I see to it that one day will be there wearing the Missoni robe.

Great idea. Call me opinionated (and people do) but most travel sites are very undiscriminating – too many places, too obvious, no real critique of the place, location or hotel OR they are trying to be too ridiculously hip and exclusionary. I love to travel too but with two children one who is two and never and I mean never stays still long flights are a problem. Tried it with Singapore and Bali last year and I swore never again…!!! At least until he’s three.

What a fantastic idea Alek – looking forward to travelling vicariously through your very stylish eyes! Yes, I’m with you on the travel planning thing. I can never understand why people would leave their itinerary to a stranger to plan for them. It’s really fun to do your own research, find little gems to stay at & discover the REAL world.

I have read this post 3 times today. I’m in love with the idea of this hotel–the fact that it actually exists is mind-boggling. What amazing design. Missoni is a favorite.
Traveling Thursdays will be something to look forward to. Can you check out that cave hotel in Turkey at some point?

What a fabulous idea! Drop dead hotel! My sister married a Scot and goes there often. I’ll have to tell her to drop in there on their next trip this fall.
So jealous! The travels are seldom now with kids, instead we just keep moving to stay busy and crazy!

Love this idea! Especially coming from you since you are quite the world traveler I completely trust you with anything you say.
Amazing hotel that you posted. Too funny my IL’s are actually on their way back from Scotland today. Not that they would ever stay in a hotel like that, but I would love to.
I keep bugging Jon that we must go to Scotland so hopefully it will be happening sooner than later.
