Today’s Crush: A Contemporary Beach Hut
July 15, 2009 | 42 comments

Ever since I laid eyes on my first beach hut in Brighton, England, I’ve been completely captivated. I think they’re like playhouses for adults. In case you missed it, Maya had a great post about beach huts recently.
This hut – if you can even call it that – elevates the concept to another level.

The owner designed this herself for her family. It’s so fabulous in its simplicity.

The giant glass door maybe my favorite part:

Some of you know that I’m looking for a rustic little cabin. But I would chuck that idea out the window in two seconds if I could have this chalet (as the owner calls it) on this plot of beachfront.

Do any of my British pals out there have a beach hut and if so, can I invite myself over? I’m a great guest.

Wow! I love the inside (so stylish and functional) and the glass wall, but maybe the exterior looks a bit too industrial for a beach? – I prefer the charm of the painted Brighton-style ones.

My sister lives very near Brighton so we go there quite often and we love the beach huts…they bring back so many memories of wonderful holidays when we were children and our parents would hire a beach hut for the day and you could cook small meals and have warming cups of tea ( very important on an English holiday !!!! ) and wriggle out of wet swimming costumes in the privacy of the hut.
Brilliant post and lots of fond memories. XXXX

Hi Alek!
Just stopped by to say have left a little award for you on my site. Additionally, am also your newest follower!
Terrific post as always! Incidentally, beach huts especially on the South Coast of the UK can be very expensive AND hard to find. When one comes on the market, potential buyers often have to queue up to put in an offer (usually the asking price!)
Have a wonderful day & see you again soon!
xxxLOL LOLA:)

Hi Alek: My husband remembers the days of vacationing in a Brighton hut. I loved the one you posted with it’s simplicity after all, isn’t it all about being outside? Oh & those shingles! Fun, fun post!

Love the soft hue of the shingles; imagine they fade beautifully into the beach’s colours. Divine inside too!

They are lovely!
This was my blog post on them a few weeks back http://herlittleplace.blogspot.com/2009/06/beach-huts-bunting-and-paddle-boats_30.html
Remember I was writing an article on them too for The Guardian? You said you might like to see it, though I have a sneaking suspicion you might like the pictures gallery I put together better (article to the left of the link)

Mise: The painted ones are adorable! Seeing a straight line of brightly colored ones on the shore really makes me happy.
Huma: That was such a great article! It should have been included in this post.
Daniella: I thought that was funny too.

I absolutely LOVE this. Why compete with the gorgeous natural landscape? So simple, so sustainable. I want one. On 100 feet of Muskoka waterfront. (May not happen.)

super sweet these huts are. reminds me of the gorgeous rustic cabins and cottages at the tip of cape cod in provincetown. i would paint my days away and drink red wine by that little woodstove at night. aaah, perfection

Now this isn’t about beach huts but I’m intrigued by where Alek is from, and why you move so often … or is that a mystery?

Mise: CIA. Just kidding! Actually, MI6. Kidding again! I like the idea of being mysterious but the answer is quite dull. I’ve just always had wanderlust and I love change, new environments, different cultures, etc. It’s funny you ask this now because I have a few posts related to this in the coming week. Let me know if you’re still intrigued after those.

I live not far from this beach hut and can confirm it is very edible! I guess you’re already aware of http://www.materialicious.com/tags/cabins(see also huts & sheds at bottom) – warning: it’s hard to have just a quick look at that site! In case you haven’t heard of these, check out http://www.shedblog.co.uk and http://www.shedworking.co.uk/ for further doses of cabin fever! Best wishes, Carol
